Hi,

A few years ago possibly 4 or 5 i went out to Asda, had a cheese salad (cheese, lettuce, tomatoes etc), did a full injection of my QA, maybe 10u as a guess, think i was on Novorapid for QA & Insulatard for BI at the time, then several hours later i had a VERY bad hypo, falling about, banging my head against the wall in the bathroom even threw my daughter's hamster across the room! I was in hospital for an overnight stay. Does anyone know what could've been the cause of my hypo? I DO NOT intend for this to happen again!

You injected insulin when you didn't need any, as there were no carbs in your meal, but you couldn't of known that back then when you were unaware of carb counting, you were just told to inject every meal time......

What do you think was the carb content of the salad ?

I would guess maybe not more than 20g or so (if that) from you've said.

For most people 10u of novorapid would cover a meal of about 80-120g so you had a defecit of maybe 100g carbs.

No wonder then that you went severely hypo and became a hamster throwing demon. 😱

Do you carb count now ? ie. do you estimate the carb content of your meals and adjust your bolus to match ?

Novorapidboi26,

Exactly!

Robster65,

Re: For most people 10u of novorapid would cover a meal of about 80-120g so you had a defecit of maybe 100g carbs, i realise this now

RE: Do you carb count now ? ie. do you estimate the carb content of your meals and adjust your bolus to match ? With the help of this forum & the Dafne online forum i'm trying slowly but surely to learn. I've also just bought the carbs & cals visual book. I went to see my new dsn acouple of weeks ago & she showed me the copy of it in her book, i'm off to see her again at the end of this week & we'll learn some more.

You'd think after nearly 20 years i'd know it all!
I took a bit of a dip this last few months ie missing testing, missing the odd injection here and there etc but a couple of weeks before i saw my dsn & also when i saw her i'm back on track again, marking everything down in my dafne online diary & first go on the forums on there, joining up with this forum which was recommended to me.....

Lol about the "hamster throwing demon"

Eek this is scary, but at least you know why that happened now. Clearly not enough carbs for the insulin, or too much insulin for the carbs...whichever way you want to look at it!

So fingers crossed, it won't happen again! 🙂

did the hamster survive???!! 😱

Yep it was very scary!

A biiiiig fingers crossed but at least as you say i now know why it happened.

My Daughter's hamster did thankfully survive for some time afterwards but sadly we don't have him now :( We have have our 8yr old Westie, Whisky 🙂

This happened to me shortly after being diagnosed (Err apart from the throwing hamster bit 😛) i was put on a set amount of insulin for each meal...however they didnt actualy tell me what to eat! So theres me injecting 8 units of insulin for a virtually carb free omlette!!! Needless to say some bad results but its all a learning curve i guess....🙂

Aaawww I love Hammy Hamsters, they are so cute 🙂 I'm so glad it was okay, I once through my daughters reading book on the floor AND then threw a cup of tea all over the lounge carpet, I love tea and I didn't even care:O I was obviously haven't a real low hypo, but I wasn't carb counting then. Scary( especially with a child in the house :( ) Sheena

Such a high dose of insulin for such a low carb meal would put most people into a hypo, I would still need to bolus for a salad but would only inject 4 or possibly 5 units depending on the quantity and ingredients.

Sounds scary.

If you haven't already been on one, see if you can get on a DAFNE course.
