An international team of researchers and clinicians led by York University Professor Michael Riddell has published a set of guidelines to help people with type 1 diabetes exercise safely to avoid fluctuations in blood sugar.

"Regular exercise can help individuals with diabetes to achieve their blood lipid, body composition, fitness and blood sugar goals, but for people living with type 1 diabetes, the fear of hypoglycemia, loss of glycemic control, and inadequate knowledge around exercise management are major barriers," said Riddell, in the Faculty of Health at Toronto's York U. "This is a big struggle for both type 1 diabetes patients and their healthcare providers. This first ever set of consensus guidelines from leading experts will help them."

Prof Riddell has published a number of interesting studies on T1 and exercise. Shortly after I was diagnosed I remember going out on my bike. I'd had the warnings about hypos and exercise from the DSN. Anyway I had blackcurrant dextrosol tablets to hand, I'd done a BM visual blood glucose reading which I didn't fully understand what it meant and I was half expecting to keel over. Of course I never did. From that moment on I realised I needn't let it stop me.

I wish I had your confidence, Matt. It doesn't matter how many studies or sets of guidelines I read, I still find my biggest barrier to exercise is my fear of going hypo. I LOVE exercising, always have done, but I just can't seem to get over this fear...my exercise bike gets a lot of use, but it's nothing like swimming underwater or hiking on a coastal path on a beautiful spring day. Anyone got a spare kick up the a**e? Aim it in my direction, pleeeez.🙄🙂
