Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes for 2 years now and always felt that I had brought it on myself through not looking after myself by being 3 stone overweight and doing very little exercise. I am now a lot fitter than I use to be but still struggling with my weight but trying to loose some weight.

However in the last 6 months my eldest brother has been diagnosed with type 2 and today my youngest brother who will be 49 on Saturday has just been diagnosed with type 2 also.

It's looking to be one strong family gene.

Got one more brother and sister to go.

My father died over 45 years ago when he was only 48 do I guess he must of had or would of developed it.

Welcome to the forum Sheilagh.

Congratulations on your success with increasing fitness so far - that will (most likely) already have had a good effect on reducing your insulin resistance. For help / support with wieght loss, there's a Weight Loss Group section of this forum.

There are some genetic studies into type 2 diabetes, so worth speaking with GP initially if you and your siblings would be prepared to give a blood or motuh skin cell sample for DNA analysis. Or try Newcastle University Medical School - they might have a study running. Gateshead Millennium Study is following growth and development of children born to mothers resident in Gateshead in 1999 / 2000 - not appropriate for you (unless you have a child already enrolled in GMS), but they might be able to point you in the right direction.

Your other siblings won't necessarily get type 2 diabetes, particularly if they can keep active and maintain normal weights.

Welcome to the forum? LOL Sheilaigh has made over 2,000 posts anyways I digress, sorry to hear about the diagnosis of your brother just lately not nice but he is not alone with this at least and his family will be able to help and support him well.

PS well done with the the weight loss so far hope it continues to improve x

Meant to say, welcome to Sheilagh's siblings, if they choose to join forum.

In some sort of very odd sense (and I hope you take this the right way!) I hope you manage to take some comfort in the seemingly strong genetic predisposition in your family Sheilagh. I'm very sorry to hear about your brothers' diagnoses obviously, but I hope that your feelings that 'you brought it on yourself' subside. Seems to me like it was always on the cards and you should not berate yourself for anything.

Great to hear that you feel fitter these days, and good luck with your weight loss 🙂

If there is a genetic predisposition to you becoming diabetic, then it will unfortunately happen. It can be controlled.

My father and an uncle are diabetic, but my mum still tells me it is all my fault because I am too fat and eattoo many sweets and wont listen to reason...

Hi

Hi, Well as the saying goes things come in three's, i one way lets hope it stops at just you three, but dont be putting yourself down about it.
In my family too, is a very strong hereditry history of type 1 diabetes, me, my sister and my brother have it, my brother son also.
My Dads dad and also my dads sister, my dad is one of seven, she was the only one to get diabetes.
At times my mum and dad both feel bad, that they have passed it on to us in there genes, but its not there fault nor it yours.

Keep looking after yourself and re assure your brothers too, that its not the end of the world, butthey start of a new challenge in life to conqour.

Best of luck in the future, and welcome to the Gene club

Regards Howard

It definitely runs in the family!

My grandfather had Type 2 and died of associated heart disease age 70. Wasn't very overweight. Mum has it, and so does her sister (the thinnest one in the family). I was diagnosed about 8 years ago, have only just progressed to first medication, Metformin. Progress in me is unusually slow, and I do respond well to weight loss (last diabetic check showed me as bang on normal after losing 4st). Good luck with your own weight loss, hope it has a positive effect for you.

Thanks folks. My poor brother is struggling with just being diagnosed. He has just got his hbA1c result back from the doctor and it was 16 so pretty high. He has got an appointment with the Diabetic nurse next week.

At least h has got brother and I to give him help and support.
