Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I am getting up to readings of 7.3 to 8.9 every morning now.
I am on a very low carb diet, and up till recently have had excellent results from this averaging 5.8 to 6.3. I take 2 metformin twice a day. A couple of months ago I had great results from the doctors and thought I could increase my carbs a little i.e one piece of toast a day or a single potatoe, I stopped doing that but cant get my morning bg down.
There are so many variables to think of, and im not sure where to start.
1. stress is really high at the moment and I cant avoid it
2. different metformin prescribed
3. low carb foods not as low as stated? etc...

I know from constant testing that pasta, potatoes and bread are triggers for me, rice less so. I live off veg and meat, no fruit, little milk, drink de caff coffee.

I am very very worried that my diabetes is deteriorating, even when I have worked so hard to eat low carb. I hate cooking my family all the wonderful foods I cant eat, and am getting angry watching their inconsiderate eating of yummy things in front of me nowadays.
I assumed, and read that by controlling my bg I could stop any damage to my body. I am so upset and worried. I feel such a failure, not helped by mean comments and press saying that I did this to myself.
I cant see the diabetic nurse until next friday when I will see if I need to change medication or whatever.

So sorry to dump this all you all, many of you have such a terrible time with this sh**ty desease and other illnesses, but I needed to get this out as its eating me up, pun intended. Big hugs to you all.

Interesting...I have just posted an almost identical problem...sudden rise in levels which won't come down. I have thought it may be stress too. I seem to be doing the same as you regarding diet and medication. I have increased to 3 metformin a day just to see if that works (no success yet)

But I did go to the Doctors and he said either - an infection that he can't find. may be the tail end of one or the beginning or the diabetes has become more aggresive and I will need more/different treatment.

He also said it wasn't anything I have done so don't beat yourself up about it apparently its 'one of those things'

Hi Woolstone,

I think you're being a bit hard on yourself. Stress does elevate bg levels and that might be the cause of your recent elevated levels?

You've been doing so well and your levels aren't too bad. Have you tried having a snack at bedtime. What time do you take your Metformin? I'm on the same dosage as you and sometimes it depends on how late I take it, but it can make a difference if you take it at bedtime?

This may be a temporary blip and just keep doing what you're doing. You sound so disciplined and I'm sure you'll be fine.

Donna 🙂🙂🙂

Hi Woolstone

Sorry to hear that you are having a hard time right now. Can't really advise as a T1, but the stress really can't help, and as Donna says, though you are disappointed, your levels are still pretty good, especially if you can keep things in check through the rest of the day. Mornings are often the hardest time.

Apologies, I don't know your history or situation... are you able to take much in the way of gentle (or not so gentle) exercise? 30 mins or so of whatever you can manage is hugely beneficial, and it sees that the effect of regular exercise builds up and affects levels even on days when you don;t do anything. I can certainly see a change in my insulin requirements if my level of activity drops off for a week or so.

Thankyou so much for taking the time to help my boo hooing!

I do snack in the evening, mainly an atkins bar and a pack of scratchings, but what is the pro's and cons of eating or not eating in the evening?

I take my metformin straight after breakfast and dinner (6.30 sh), should i leave it longer than that? how does the timing change the effect of metformin do you know?

Thankyou again from a no longer snivelling julie!

I do take the dog out most days, but because of pains I dont jog or bounce around with energy i must say! Actually was a bit disapointed with low carb diet, for that as expected energy levels to increase. I think a school report would say.... spends too much time daydreaming, room for improvment!

hi Julie.... I don't think I can help as I am not on metformin..... but I am struggling with this damn D myself .... and morning levels are always the worst

sending you hugs though ((( )))

Hi there,

That's the beauty of this site. we're all here to support each other and yes, we all have c**p days when D gets to us all. My problem is daydreaming and not being active enough. I'm the sort of person who becomes very anxious if I'm waiting for results. Wish I was more like my husband who doesn't worry about anything!!!

Donna 🙂

cheers everyone......off to eat my bacon and eggs now! Have a great day.

Hi Julie, you are NOT a failure! Don't even think it - you have done extremely well in adapting your diet to reduce your need for medications, and the knowledge you have gained will be greatly useful to you for the rest of your life. However the media want to present it, diabetes is not something that everyone can avoid, nor is it a disease that everyone can control through changes to diet and activity levels. Sometimes, maybe in a less dramatic and more drawn-out way than with a Type 1, these things are not enough and the pancreas starts to fail. It is then unable to produce sufficient insulin, however low carb you may go, and needs the support of either extra medication or insulin. This is beyond a person's control, but the misinformed media presents diabetes as a lifestyle disease that people should feel guilty having. Nonsense! 😱

Keep up the good work! I'm sure that, with the help of a little more medication, you can get back to those excellent numbers again 🙂
