Hi Book Gail, I was on Metformin for 2 years, and suffered horrendously for most of the time, (I wasn't even aware there was a modified release tablet until after I came off the tablets!) I used to also get the hot/cold sweats and nausea. However, I definitely found my symptoms lessened if I took it after eating, and also if I had a low carb meal. As Carol said, things seemed to be more 'urgent' if my BG was high.... which it was most of the time!
Saying that, the first couple of weeks on Metformin, until I built up to the full dose were definitely the worst, and things got slightly better after that.
See how you get on Gail, and if not go back to your GP. And drink lots of water! 🙂

I have been on metformin since November of last year and at first i was fine with one a day then i went up to 2 and that was fine but 3 a day was a nightmare so i am back down to 2 a day after i talked to my nurse about it.I have been taking Orlistats (Weight loss tablets) since last summer so i have been used to living in the bathroom for a while now lol you just have to stay away from fatty foods till your body starts getting used them.
I found eating less carbs helped a lot and i would take metformin 15 min before eating its all trial and error.
