I've always liked lime juice so when I saw it on a pub menu, I had a glass with soda water. I enjoyed it so did some research when I got home. Most of the lime juices on sale have added sugar and/or artificial sweetener, but Rose's does not. I found a 25ml serving topped up with 225ml soda water is just 5 cals and 1.2gm carbs. It is refreshing, not too sweet, does not leave that awful aftertaste of additives, and takes away my cravings for something sweet. It works for me!

Thanks @Fellinia

That sounds like a good option for a soft drink. I get offered presses and squash and most of them are loaded with carbs, so end up opting for tap water. this Sounds like a good alternative.

Was it a special squash-type Roses @Felinia or a sugar-free one? Roses Lime Cordial has sugar in and, if I remember correctly, is around 10gcarbs a glass (diluted). I haven’t had it for years but used to have it sometimes when ill.

According to the Ocado website, the nutritional info is this: https://www.ocado.com/products/rose...OadOMP8EuIXgOV5GdihoCQ1YQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

At home, I might be inclined to do a bit of the cordial plus some "fresh" lemon or lime juice, then dilute. I say "fresh" as it could be Jif lemon juice, or any of those similar citrus offerings, often in the bakery section at the supermarket, but then I quite like tart flavours.

@Felinia Looks like your nutritional info may be wrong. Asda also shows 4.9g for 100mls of it diluted as per recommendation and 12g carbs for a 250ml glass.

Yes, someone else has pointed that out. I've gone back and checked my source and you're right. I must have been having a "senior moment" when I first looked - perhaps looking at straight lime juice, not the cordial. But I am really struggling to see how 25ml lime cordial can have 12+g carbs before soda water is added. Morrisons Lime cordial has 6gm carbs for the same measure. But I guess that's the artificial sweeteners - YUK. I'll just have to make sure I add it correctly to my carbs.

I was thinking perhaps Nutra check or whatever you use, had their data wrong.
2 teaspoons of sugar or thereabouts, doesn't seem unreasonable for a glass of lime cordial. After all, limes are pretty sour. Personally a couple of slices of lime in a glass of tap water is enough flavour and tartness for me,

I have never been keen on fizzy drinks and whilst I like a rum and diet cola, I prefer to leave my cola until it is flat and enjoy it diluted at least half and half with water so that it is not so sweet, even when I have it with rum.

I’d rather have sugar than artificial sweeteners when I can, so I’d probably add a small amount of Roses rather than go for an artificially sweetened one. The sugar ones are often better quality IMO (in general not specifically Roses).

There again I wouldn't want 100ml of cordial (any flavour) in a hi-ball glass/tumbler - approx an inch in the bottom of the glass is more than enough.

The 100ml carb values are all as diluted. Roses is described as a concentrated cordial. Interestingly, it was the first such fruit drink as lime juice (to prevent scurvy) had previously been mixed with rum to preserve it. Sugar was used by Roses as an alternative. So I guess it was a fore-runner of squash - which has now become a travesty full of artificial sweeteners and other cr*p.

When I’m ill and struggling to eat, I like a proper fruit squash with sugar, but they’re so much harder to find now, thanks to the Sugar Tax and money-saving by companies. I really fancied some old-fashioned barley water the other day (I was planning to drink it before exercise) but couldn’t find any

No, Nutracheck were right - I had my sums wrong!!! Make up instructions vary from 1 part cordial to 4 or 6 parts water, whereas I have 1 part cordial to 9 parts water. I don't like it strong. Good job I'm retired as I was a Statistician by occupation and am disgusted with myself!!!!! 😡

I have this one. Sainsbury’s own. It’s pretty good.

It’s the sweeteners I’m not keen on @EmmaL76 I do have them occasionally but generally try to avoid them. That one looks better than some though 🙂

Me neither, in fact I’m sure I’m allergic to some. When I started trying to bake sugar free I tried most of the artificial sugars/sweeteners. I hate the after taste, they blow my stomach up and some have a weird cold feeling on your tongue. So I decided I’d rather have a tiny bit of something real. I’m okay with the cordials but not much else.

A bit like Jeremy Clarkson giving the wrong answer to a car related question when the contestant 'asked the host' on Millionaire. I thought, I hope he is ashamed of himself.

I can't take artificial sweeteners either which is why I opted for Rose's as it does not have any. When I was ill last year I asked my neighbour to pick me up some Lucozade, which my mum used to give me when I was little, and I loved it. But now it is full of the artificial additives and left a disgusting aftertaste. The neighbour had it back, free, as her kiddies liked it! I had the same problem with yogurt, but so far I am OK with authentic Greek yogurt (not Greek style)

@Felinia Yes, they’ve ruined Lucozade. That was idiotic - a glucose drink with only a smidgeon of glucose - and unnecessary because they could simply have left the original Lucozade alone and had a separate low-sugar or sugar-free range. I buy Coke or Pepsi now.

Hi Rebrascora et al

I tried to correct my mistake in Nutracheck, based on what you quoted for ASDA, which was 12gm carbs for a 250ml glass, based on the 1:4 ratio of 50ml:200ml. I only have 25ml:225ml and this is what NutraCheck came back with - 64.6gm carbs in a 250ml glass. I'm going to use your figures as I trust you and them!!!!! And this will be my final word - new resolution to check, check, check!

What you have shown in your table seems complete rubbish, 25g FAT in cordial????. The 12g carb I'm sure is the sensible amount.
Looks as if genuine Rose's is is a rarity.

Yeah, it looks like they mean Sugar not fat. I’ve found Nutracheck inaccurate and annoying before. I tend to use the bottle/can/packet or look online at one of the grocery websites where they show the nutritional info of each product.
