Rinsing cooked rice

I agree with @helli . When I boil rice, I frequently manage to boil it over on the stove, and the resultant mess dries to a thin rice paper, like you find on the bottom of the old fashioned almond macaroon biscuits. So yes, some starch does escape into the water. However, when I make a risotto, all the escaping starch just leaches out into the rest of the ingredients in the pan, giving the finished dish that traditional gloopiness . Do I bolus differently for the two? No, I do not.

Rice water is considered good for improving your skin and hair by the Japanese. If rice is prepared specifically for making rice water then that water will have about 11g carbs per 100ml.
So the answer to your question is probably 'It all depends'

I’m autistic and it’s hard to communicate in writing but my intentions are always to help people. Some members of the forum got upset at me putting the explanation of autism in my signature so I had to remove it.

If us on the forum can’t give a detailed enough answer to satisfy someone’s questions then suggesting they research further on Google is just a sensible move to get more information. Nothing mean about it and I’ve no idea why you’d say “no need to talk to you like that” - I literally don’t have a clue what that means. That I can’t suggest Google?
Why on earth would people be upset that you mentioned autism in your signature? That’s awful. I think I’ve had run-ins with you in the past and I apologise for that, when I saw that in your signature it helped me to realise that you don’t mean to be how you come across. My daughter was diagnosed autistic at 15 and while I knew something about it before, I’ve had a fairly steep learning curve. I’m lucky that she can explain how she feels and sees things, so it helps me to understand her. I also do my best to try to help her understand other people! She is blunt to the point of sounding rude sometimes, but doesn’t mean to be that way at all, she thinks she’s just having a normal conversation and wouldn’t think anything of it at all if someone spoke that way to her. Keep on contributing @Lucyr - you are clearly knowledgable!

And I apologise for hijacking this thread - I can’t add anything to the discussion about rice, sorry

They basically said something along the lines of having it in my signature meant I was deliberately using autism as an excuse to insult people and needed to stop

I am in the "yes, there are carbs (starch) in the rinse water but not enough to make a difference" camp.

I think the question to decide whether it makes negligible difference or no difference would be whether the rice is being weighed raw or cooked to calculate the carbs. I was assuming cooked as it’s going in a rice salad and so you’d be weighing the portion you eat as and when you eat it, not making it each time, and as a 150g portion was mentioned which sounds cooked not raw portion size.

If you’re weighing your cooked portion of rice then it’s whether the proportion of carb in cooked rice changes when washed vs just drained (if needed) that we’re interested in. That won’t change because the rice hasn’t changed and you might just have an extra grain or two of rice for your 150g portion.

If the carb content was taken when the rice is raw though then it could go from no difference to negligible difference, as you won’t get that extra grain or two of rice, you have just washed a tiny bit of the rice away.

That just shows their ignorance then doesn’t it. Some people don’t want to understand no matter how much you try to explain. It helped me, I hope I wasn’t the only one.

That was awful of them. I have known you a long time and I have always known you have a good heart. Whoever it was needs to develop some empathy!

It helped me too and I totally agree. Bit when I noticed it was removed I thought it may have been down to Lucy’s choice so didn’t want to pry incase my memory was wrong. But to for her to have to remove it because of it being used as an excuse is just diabolical. . It’s definitely ignorance.
