Hi all,

Hope your all well.

Had retina scan last week and results received today shoe R2 preproliferative in right eye. letter says findings are acceptable at this time, but last year was R0.

Surely this is bad, or is R2 something that isn't too bad? Is it time to brace myself for even more new hospital visits!! hope not!

Thats good news that you don't need any laser treatment at this time. The reccomendations are to keep tight control to prevent it developing any further. Does the letter indicate if you need to be seen more often, or back again in a years time?

I think a change in the way these results are received is needed. I think they should call and explain any changes.
 
One of the reasons our eyes are checked annualy is so that any changes can be spotted.

I'm not sure exactly what the results mean, but in general if there is anything to worry about you get called back/
 
R2 ehy!? Well lets hope it goes up to R756!!

Hope you are okay about it Dave, as others said at least we get it monitored! How have your levels been of late, you happy with them?

Hi everyone. I've been diabetic for about 20 years now, originally mis-diagnosed as type 1, injected for about 15 years and suffered hypos non-stop until a new GP actually listened to me and re-diagnosed me as type 2. Could be 1.5, but whatever... I've had retinopathy screening every year with no problems, but this year I've been told I have R2 in both eyes. I seem to have skipped R1, so should I be feeling as concerned as I am now about suddenly being R3? I don't know much about it, as I only had the letter today and have Googled all about it. I'd love some advice of some of you guys, or some literature you could recommend to me... I can't get a GP appointment until the end of the week, so I'm hoping I don't have to feel worried all week... My dad lost the sight in one of eyes from diabetes when he was in his early 50's/ I've just turned 40 🙂
 
I'm sorry, I have no idea what these R numbers mean - I have never seen results expressed like that.
 
I wonder if they relate to the stage of retinopathy - stage 1, stage 2 etc.

I have mostly only heard terms used like ‘background’ ‘pre-proliferative’ ‘proliferative’ etc. Not sure how the stages correlate though.
 
Yes that's the way I've always seen and heard it reported too, Mike.

Why don't you ring whoever writes the letters you get, Rob - and ask them what it means? - and then tell us, please!
 
I too have never heard of these terms, and find it quite staggering that they’ve given you this information with no explanation. I second Trophywench.
 
My eye consultant has recently started using R1 M1 etc but never explained them, fortunately I already knew what they were from previously googling. If I received a letter from retinal screening saying R2 I would definitely ask for a referral to the hospital eye department so they can do a thorough eye examination, explain to me what is happening to my eyes and tell me what to do if things change.
