orienteering

We used to enjoy orienteering in the UK This is a really great sport for families and we did it throughout our children's childhood. Sadly in France (at least where we live), there is more emphasis on the superfit and the young so we've given it up. Geocaching is not quite the same but its still a great way of getting out and exploring places.

As Helen says, orienteering is also a great way of giving an incentive to get out and do something. In the UK, there is plenty of emphasis on beginners and children, although there are also world class British racers. For ideas of where / how to start, try either a permanent orienteering course (POC - often in country parks of forestry commission areas) or an local event (CATI / Come And Try It, SMILE / SuMmer Low key Events, MADO / Malvern And District Orienteers etc are particularly suitable for beginners, but there is usually someone who an help if you make your newness known at registration). Many clubs have pages for beginners on their websites - too many to list here. Country Parks such as Wandlebury near Cambridge run 1 or 2 courses a yeat for beginners, as well as hosting 1 or 2 events organised by local club. So, lots of ways into a fun sport that can be done at many different levels of ability and fitness.
