Hiya. Ive just joined up as my GP practitioner said it would be a good idea, so here i am!
Im Evie, 54, living in the SW, have quite a bit of weight on me and hba1c of 40mm/ol. So im pre-prediabetic and Im looking positively towards shifting this weight and the risks involved.
Looking forward to lots of discussions, tips and advice.
Thankyou for having me!!
I find all this weight loss stuff fascinating because it seems that different approaches suit different people. Its not a case of everybody should do this or that and all will be well.
For me going low carb, low calorie but ensuring I have enough protein, fibre, fats with a watchful eye on salt and cholesterol was the way to go and it worked for me remarkably well. But that's me. A different approach might not have worked so well.
What I recognised from the start was that its a long term goal that needs patience and resilience. Resilience because sometimes the weight stubbornly stays static even though the diet continues and, patience cos it can take a while.
Good luck with your journey. Its great feeling fitter and fitter even incrementally so each day.
I think exercise is the key factor. I have shifted a fair few stones on low carb high protein, eat like a rabbit diet. But I am at the point now where walking 6+ kms a day isn’t having the same effect as it was. The dreaded running is fast approaching I think
I thought pre diabetes is normally 42mmol and above. Perhaps your GP is being cautious and i suppose its always good to shift excess weight for general health. Good luck, i personally found low carb and exercise has def helped me .
Exercise for me is getting in the pool and doing three 60 minute water workout classes a week. But my local pool is open from 7am to 9pm so people can come for a swim before or after work. Running is most definitely out for me as well!!!
I got a Fitbit and this records distance walked, steps, heart rate etc and i aim for 10k steps a day min most days. It really has helped and encouraged me to push myself even when i don't feel like it. I have also noticed my heart rate has improved when pushing myself walking up hills briskly etc. A year ago i would have been heart pounding and gasping doing what i do easily now. Of course a lot is the weight loss, but using this fit band has helped towards achieving that too.
Oh sorry 10,000 steps lol. But sometimes over 10,000 metres on a good day. I think i am older than you because you mentioned you may have to start running. My running days are over. Well done doing 6km a day though. Maybe you are plateauing and the weight will suddenly start moving again soon. I have this happen.
Weight loss can be a great help in reducing your chances of becoming diabetic. It's great that your GP caught this early so that you can make safe lifestyle changes.

wow, yes 10k steps makes more sense, i am doing around 14k steps a day with the hour walk and general mooching about. I am mid 40’s - running should be achievable- but will start on the treadmill in the garage - although think my wife has worn it out in lockdown so might have to service it first!
Good luck with your weight loss plans. Have you decided whether to follow a specific approach (eg 5:2) or will you just be cutting back on portions and cutting out sweet stuff and snacks?
