Relationship to Diabetes
At risk of diabetes
Hi, I've just received a second result at 44 on the HBac etc test. I'm aged 76, very fit; 10k/day many years, can carry a golf bag if needed, and at 179 cms tall and 67kg do not have a weight problem, though. I have lost several kilos without trying. I follow all the diet guidelines, have been vegetarian for several years. I've had counting heart issues all dealt with promptly (no emergencies, two stents and a pacemaker).

my dilemma is that the GP practice is recommending a programme clearly aimed at the overweight and unfit and I just don't think I would get any benefit. There are no changes recommended that I haven't taken on!

Hello Jan and welcome to the forum.
I wonder if you are on any meds that can cause raised blood sugars for starters and another thought is your weight loss, if that has been sudden then please ask that you are tested for type 1 diabetes. Type 1 can develop at any age, 44 as you say isn't quite there for diabetes yet but better to make enquiries now rather than later. Is your GP aware of your weight loss?

Welcome to the forum @Jan Gillett

You mention that you have lost weight without trying, so it might be worth considering whether you are in fact T1, and have a slow onset of diabetes, where your body is gradually destroying your beta cells which make the insulin. It would be worth asking for tests for this if the weight loss has been rapid. In the week before my diagnosis I lost 1.5 stone.

You mention that you are following the diet guidelines. Are these focused on the amount of carbs in your food at each meal? Whatever type of diabetes we have we need to match the insulin and food. In T2 this can be done in a variety of ways such as reducing carbs, changing exercise regimes, and/or using medication. If it turns out you have T1 or LADA you would need to inject insulin to match the carbs you choose to eat.

Let us know how you get on and come back with any questions thatyou have.

Many thanks for the amazingly rapid response. I'm medicated with Atorvastatin Rivaroxaban and Perindoprol for my various heart conditions, and am due to have a review meeting with the specialist in two weeks. I have a booked telephone session with the Gp nurse on Tuesday, but she's the one who has suggested the many weeks' course and hasn't been interested that it's not intended for people like me. I will seek a GP meeting after seeing the heart specialist I think.

oops, messages overlapping. The guidelines for diet are a combination of reading such as this website, and following the Zoe story, with emphasis on trying to support the microbiome.

It is just a bit harder when you are vegetarian as the low carb or zero carb foods meat and fish will be off your menu and many veggie meals are pasta or rice based and it is quite surprising how high carb some of the plant based foods are.
But you have to balance your diet to be suitable for the other conditions you have as the way people compensate for the low carb is to increase protein and healthy fats so they can stabilise weight.
As you say the dietary suggestions are for people who most likely need to lose weight. Your HbA1C is really only just in the prediabetic zone and unless you are suffering symptoms then surely to maintain that would be sensible and if you can get it down a bit by some modest reduction in carbs that would be OK.
There may be a few substitutions you can make to help.
If you would like to post the sort of meals you have then people may spot some things that may be a problem.

Welcome to the forum @Jan Gillett

Sorry to hear that you are having a frustrating time, and are concerned that the course you’ve been referred to is not appropriate for your circumstances. :(

Hopefully you can get a bit more joy after your meetings, and get a more tailored package of support put in place - including a possible check for cPeptide levels and GAD antibodies, or some other investigstions into the unintended weight loss.

You might find some useful snippets of information in the Learning Zone (orange tab in the main menu) and do keep asking away on the forum with any questions as they arise 🙂
