my other half has been an insulin dependent type 2 for over 30 years, he has had every complication under the sun and is a non communicator
I recently discovered that all his insulin is out of date and when I queried this he told me that as his last couple of hb1ac have been good and he’s hardly been using any insulin he is seeing the diabetic nurse next month with a view to coming off of insulin. Fantastic news if this is do able.
My concern is that he relies on how he feels rather than measuring his sugars has no record of food intake or insulin use or sugar levels. Just the 3/12 hb1ac which are ‘good’
How accurate are hb1ac for this type of decision ?
He has lost weight and exercises 3/4 times a week. He no longer works due to retinopathy and diabetic foot disease
Help please I need information

Hello @Freddyp , welcome to the forum. I know you must be very worried as I would be if I were in your place.
I am no expert I’ll tag @Northerner and @mikeyB to see if they can help advise

Thank you, yes I am worried- he’s a history of non compliance resulting in complete sight loss in one eye and massive field defect in his other, he's 5 toes removed ( some from each foot) been in a contact plaster for foot ulcers 3 times and no longer works. 3 years of non attendance to hospital and Gp appointments ended up with kidney and blood pressure problems.
He’s finally taken control and if he’s succeeded then I’ll be delighted- he’s 62 and was diagnosed age 28

This must be very worrying for you. I would feel the same.

As far as I know the hba1c gives an indication of the blood sugars over the previous 3 months and I thought it was quite an accurate indication of blood sugar control.

Other more experienced posters should be along to help I am sure as they may know better than I.
