I'm picking up my new car today so I called the company that quoted me the best deal for my insurance on go compare. They said that it was all ok I checked that they knew I had a restricted license (which I checked that I had put on the info I had to fill out) and they said well we can't give you insurance then and said that the quote is no longer avaliable when I started saying that she couldn't do that she said she could and I said well no if I stated in the forms that I had a restricted license due to a medical condition and you gave me a quote still then you have to stick to it she said no we don't  how can they do that? Is there anyone I can report them to for completely misleading me. I'm angry it's not like I've got points on my license😡

I sorted out some insurance which is more than I paid when I renewed but at least i've got it.

One extra question - how many years (3, 2 or 1) is your restricted licence? Very frustrating, but companies can refuse cover however they see fits with their business plan. Probably one for Disability Discrimination Act, if you feel strongly enough.
Actually, I have more problems with insurance sue to being in Northern Ireland (look how many TV adverts say "not valid in NI" or similar) than with having a 3 year resticted licence due to T1D. I moved over to spend 4 months researching, informed insurance company, who said OK,but insurance came up for renewal about 3 months into stay, they wouldn't extend, especially as by then I was planning to stay for an indertiminate period (turned out to be 6 months in total)

Go to trading standards then disability discrimination, have u still got the quote given?? do u know wot she was called??u best print out all the stuff cos u may need it to prove discrimination??:(

My insurance has just gone through the roof for what they say was a house move, but only mine went up wifes stayed the same.

I have requested a written reason with the view to sticking the DDA up their jackies

Bloo## profiteering :( [/COLO R]

That is disgraceful - which company was it with? I have never had a problem with car insurance - I am with the post office at the moment, but have previously used direct line, diamond and Ibuyeco.

Hi Emma sorry that this has happened to you.

Go Compare should still have a copy of your details so print them off. Check on here what the conditions are of the offers as if they can be withdrawn then it should say so. If it doesn't I think there are a few places you could complain to

a) Go Compare itself ( after all if nothing else they cost you the price of the phone call)
b) the insurance company who declined you - there should be details on their web-site of their complaints procedure.
c) the Financial ombudsman.

Also whilst its fresh in your mind write down as much of the phone conversation as you can - its possible that whoever you spoke to misunderstood you and thought you were saying that you had had your licence revoked at some point. Could you call them back and ask for a letter stating why they had turned you down - maybe check with citizens advice first to check whether they are legally obliged to do this if you ask, then at least you will know where you stand if they start arguing.

I've so far, had no issues with my restricted licence though my insurance is due for renewal in October and I'm starting to panic.

I'm currently with SwiftCover and like I said, haven't had any problems. But I think I want to change companies as I had my car window smashed a few weeks back and I claimed through them, had to pay a ?65 excess and my NCB has been frozen for a year. For something that was totally NOT my fault.

I think it's Churchill or LV (or maybe Direct Line??) that will cover the excess etc if you're hit by an uninsured driver. My car is nearly 2 years old and is costing me alot and I am struggling to maintain it.

Guess I'll have to see when it comes to renewal. But I do think it's ridiculous that people won't insure us just because we're Diabetic. I know not to drive if I feel ill or my BG is under 5mmol. I keep extras in the car at ALL times incase something does happen so what's the issue?

Good luck Laura - I suspect that your claims record and relatively new / valuable car will be the issue, not your diabetes.
I've never owned a car less than 3 years old - bought a 3 year old one 4 years ago, and still very happy with it.
How was your window smashed? This can make a difference, as windscreen replacement doesn't usually affect NCB, as it's assumed to happen when a chip of rock flies up from road, while breakage of other windows is assumed to happen when car is stationary, when theives see something worth trying to smash & grab. So, make sure your diabetes supplies aren't left on display & don't look worth nicking when you leave the car. A blood glucose meter could look like a money wallet, for example. Bags of sweets are usually worth smashing & grabbing.

Was diagnosed in April, rang my insurance company who didn't seem too interested, but rang back after an hour or so to say that it was no problem, but thanks for letting them know. DVLA took an age to reissue a three year licence.

Have just had my insurance quote for next year, which is about the same as it was last year, for a now 4yr old Ford Mondeo, and a job which means I drive about 25-30,000 miles per year.

Quote arranged through Endsleigh, can't remember who the exact underwriters are.

They're not all bad...

Renewed the insurance a couple of weeks ago, it was expensive but then it always is because of 20,000 business miles, and telling them I'm a musician (they assume I spend all my time drunk, smashing things up and giving lifts to Elton John who would no doubt cost them a lot of money if he was injured in an accident!)

No increase though which was good news...

does everyone on insulin have a restricted license? is it free to renew? will I pay higher insurance even if I have perfectly good hypo awareness?

Thanks! Ive just applied for my new provisional since mine got stolen, so ive only just had to tell them i'm Diabetic.

Yes, anyone on insulin has a 1, 2 or 3 year licence. A few months before renewal is due, you will be sent forms to complete - with normal hypo awareness and regular check ups (annual reviews are enough), your specialist will be able to sign the form and send it back; if you don't see a diabetes specialist doctor, then you will have to go for a medical at your GP - DVLA pays for this examination, not the driver.

No way round blanket ban on people on insulin driving minibuses (professionally), large vans, PSVs, HGVs (unles you held right to drive large vans before about 1997).

No need to pay higher insurance due to insulin, remember that all new drivers and all younger drivers pay much higher premiums than experienced drivers - as with most things, shop around.

Blanket ban for C1 I believe is possible being reassesed by our european friends next year? I've forgotten exactly but slightly good news.

try lv insurance i had real trouble last year after six months off the road due to seizures am also type 1 for 15 years it seems wrong but it does not pay to be honest as i only got one quote out of any website and none from phoning however LV were said to be good and i told them all and they covered me with high excess but for little more than i was paying .My long term car insurer Hastings gave me 28 days to find other cover and then withdrew insurance as they said their underwriters would not cover me.If i had not told them who would know .

Hi Bob

I would imagine (though I don't know for sure) that if you deliberately withhold information from an insurer regarding your driving history (bans, medical problems, etc) then you may not be covered. This would presumably then be driving without insurance, which is a criminal offence.

There may be some grey areas but this sounds like a fairly clear-cut case of having to declare. It was probably for the best that you did tell them, although they don't exactly give incentives when they refuse cover afterwards.

Rob i was not suggesting driving during period of no license i just wanted to insure my bikes and car for storage and theft but they would not even do that .My point was that if i had not told themthat my license had been revoked for 6 months on medical grounds how would they know. bob

Apologies for misunderstanding Bob.

That seems very short sighted of them. Nothing like insurance companies for making up the rules as they go along. Seems like a very risk averse policy though.
