Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi, I'm Ian from Scarborough, North Yorkshire, England. I was recently diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. At the moment I am just on the diet-based plan but am to have an eye test and to see a dietitian.

Hi Ian, welcome to the forum 🙂 My favourite seaside town when I was little - loved the battleships in Peasholme Park! :D

How did you come to be diagnosed? Diabetes can be a complicated condition, but the good news is that it can be brought under good control with the right knowledge and application. I'd suggest having a read of
Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter to help put you in the picture, and would recommend investing a few pounds in a copy of
Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker - those should set you up with a good idea of what to expect and also any questions you may wish to raise either with us or your healthcare team 🙂

Hi there.

Thanks for your reply 🙂. I was diagnosed through a blood test. I had been pre-diabetes since April 2014 but the latest test showed I have Type 2. I have already had an interview with the diabetes nurse and she suggested a visit to see a dietitian, which I am doing in January. I have to have an eye test next week. My wife was diagnosed with Type 2, earlier this year, but is on medication for hers, so am not in the dark about diabetes.I wish to avoid medication and so I am eating more healthily and (my choice) cut out alcohol and reduced my intake of bread - and I now have Burgen bread. I have also bought myself a stepper as I suffer from panic attacks and so don't get out too often. I am trying to introduce new, healthy foods into my diet and the DiabetesUK recipes have been really helpful.

Yes, Peasholm Park is lovely, as is the whole of Scarborough and the surrounding areas. However, I originate from Batley, in the West Riding, and moved over here in 1988.

Ian🙂

Sounds like you have got off to a good start 🙂 My Mum came from Batley! I'm from Brighouse originally 🙂

Welcome. I too had lots of holidays in Scarborough as a child. Remember Peasholme park and open air theatre .

Welcome to the best forum for help and guidance.

Ravensthorpe girl myself but left there back in the early 70's when I joined the WRAF.

Hi Ian and welcome 🙂

I was diagnosed this year, type 2 and am diet controlled too. I also saw a dietician but by then I'd read masses and got my head round what I needed to do. Plus I'd joined this site. It's hard but do'able without meds as long as the pancreas keeps 'playing ball'.

My best advice would be to test and learn your own unique tolerances. Hope all goes well for you!

I love Scarborough too...spent many summer days in Scalby Mills (before it all changed :(

Welcome Ian

Another Scarborough lover here as well. Had many happy days on the North Yorkshire coast - Robin Hood's Bay, Whitby, Sandsend, Staithes.

Hi Ian, welcome to the forum. I was diagnosed as type 2 in August this year but have since found out that I am MODY. I Have found this forum great for help and advice. I've never been to Scarborough.

Welcome Ian, sounds like you're off to a good start, hope the dietician is helpful 🙂

Thank you everybody for your warm welcome and introducing yourself 🙂

That's uncanny. My maternal grandparents were from Dewsbury and my dad and his family were east enders. My dad was a wartime evacuee to Batley

A Ravi lass eh? I had family members live in Sackville Street, many years ago

Hi Yorkie1 - You are in a great place to get the right help.
I have only been on this forum a short while, but the amount of information i have gained from this forum is unbelieveable.
I have been spending a LOT of time here, and the more knowledge i gain the more in control i feel.

Hope to see you around the forum 🙂
