Hi to all,

i am 58 and just had the symptom of losing loads of weight so I had some tests and my blood sugar was 21. It is a massive shock and a week later feel alone with this. My levels are still quite high though coming down, and I am trying to work out the best diet. I have felt ill since the diagnosis and wanted to sleep loads! I am a vegan gluten free with a very healthy diet but never thought about calories or carbs before. I also travel around the world, sometimes in remote places and wonder how I will cope. I have so many questions and know not all will be answered like how did this happen! I intend to be positive and adapt to my new life style, one day at a time. I am ok with injecting myself and also the testing. Thanks for reading. Jo

Hi Jo! Welcome to the club no-one wanted to join - still - one does meet a very nice class of person here! LOL

Hi Jo. Welcome to the forums. I'm new to this as well so very little help. One of the experts will be along shortly.

Hi Jo, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis - you must be in an absolute whirl at the moment! It's a lot to take in to begin with, so try not to become overwhelmed with everything. It takes time, and a lot of what you learn will be from experience. What insulin are you on? It's not unusual to feel a bit up and down to begin with - your body has been through a difficult time whilst you were undiagnosed and now it is trying to get used to having insulin again, and coping with the change in blood sugar levels.

There's no reason why you shouldn't be able to continue with your preferred diet, although you may need to make substitutions or change portions so that the meals have a gentler effect on your blood sugar levels. I'd highly recommend getting a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents - ignore the title, it's suitable for all Type 1s whatever your age (I'm 57 - also diagnosed out of the blue aged 49!) 🙂 Don't worry about travel either - we have other members who travel for a living and they do this without problems. Type 1 is sufficiently well known for most aitrlines and airports to be very familiar with it 🙂

Please let us know if you have any questions and we will be more than happy to help 🙂

Hello Jo and welcome to the forum. I hope you have been put on 4 injections a day (MDI) so you can adjust your insulin to what you eat.
There are quite a few of us who are gluten free as well as type 1 diabetics. Take a nice big deep breath and take one day at a time. It's hardly surprising you feel overwhelmed by it all.

Hi Jo, welcome to the forum. I'm another oddity, diagnosed at 52 so you're by no means alone in that. As folk have said, take it slow and give yourself time to adjust. I'm sure one of our other travellers will be along soon to help with that aspect.

Welcome Jo. Was vegan myself for around 4 years but went back to just being a veggie after getting together with another veggie - compromises in the name of harmony. 🙂 Didn't have any issues with it and the diabetes although I wasn't gluten free.

Thanks all and I am not feeling so alone! I am only injecting in the morning with a background basal, I have a Lantus SoloStar pen.
I will get a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children/Adolescents, sounds great.
I have cancelled almost everything so I could have time to adjust, I was meant to be in Berlin this week and just knew it would be too difficult. Rather enjoying sleeping more and relaxing, maybe the new me will now take more time to relax!
All your messages are so positive and it is helpful to have somewhere I don't need to be strong and positive because you understand. I am finding with friends and family, I am being very positive so they feel better. I do have a few friends where I can be completely honest but they don't understand anything either!
One miracle was that after the nurse showed me everything I got home and remembered nothing. But my lovely neighbour has a son who is diabetic, so early morning I would knock on her door and she would help. That has saved me this last week. Thanks so much for all your replies.

Hi there, N-J, and welcome.🙂 There's lots to take in at first, but it does get better. There's lots of support here and friendly advice. Let us know how you're getting on.🙂

Hey - N-J - have a read of this http://www.businessballs.com/elisabeth_kubler_ross_five_stages_of_grief.htm

I didn't read that until I'd been diabetic for 35 years so all the main, initial grief was long over with - but reading it - I could remember going through every stage. It's good, because you can plot your progress and know when you've nearly done it, etc! Does cheer you up a bit, I think.

Personally I was blarting often but not regularly for the first year probably. Then a few years down the line, I realised I hadn't had to sit down and 'just cry for no reason' for absolutely ages and ages. But I never realised it was NORMAL, until about 15 years ago! Phew! (might have helped had I told someone, but of course I just thought I was being stupid, so I didn't. Soo - don't do that!)

Hi Jo
Another late bloomer here, I was diagnosed aged 40 last year. It takes time to adjust to the whole thing and if you're anything like me my brain got there much quicker than I did. It ain't so bad once you've adjusted I promise. The bit I found difficult was not having anyone who understood what I was going through, so this forum was a godsend. Welcome aboard 🙂

Hi and welcome to the forum or the fountain of knowledge as I like to call it.

Hi Jo, and welcome 🙂 I'm yet another late bloomer, diagnosed type 1 at the age of 44. You are not alone!

Hi New journey.

New to this as well although my son who was diagnosed last Thursday.

This place has been a real help. Everyone is friendly and knowledgeable.

Can't offer loads of advice as still learning but happy to say about how it has been if will help or what we have gone through.

As I have found and everyone keeps saying. Perhaps a club no one really wants to be a part of but a club that once joined is very large and very supportive. 🙂
