Recently diagnosed - self test readings seem too good to be true?

Update... just tested and porridge is still a bit too high 7.7 but the DN told me to stick with it as it is LG, I see what it does if I have it later in the day and do the egg/avocado salad at breakfast. But what is interesting is that the plant stuff really does help, most of my diet is plant based and the BGL are way down.

I certainly find that mainly plant-based works really well. Meat esp. red meat seems to up my insulin resistance; tho dairy not so much.

I've started eating some porridge (plus chia seeds, LSA mix, strawbs, blueberries, kiwi fruit, no milk), for variety & because I take seriously the "whole grains are good" studies. Generally, I find any cereals have a definite impact on BG levels but it's quite muted now, maybe up in the 7-8 range, like you, though the elevation does tend to linger a bit. I think those kinds of levels are nothing at all to worry about - "normal" people show the same levels.

I use these BG levels culled from a couple of CGM studies as my guide to "normal":

Daily average: 5.8 +/- 0.6 (one standard deviation, so 2/3 of "normal" daily average readings in the range 5.2 - 6.4).

Daily high: 8.0 +/- 1.3. That's the highest in a day, not just 2 hrs after eating, but anyway if you see "spikes" above 8.0 or even 9.0 - it's "normal".

Just read all the posts - you certainly have worked hard in a short time. I am now 3 months in to this new world. I have a selection of low carb meals which do appear to work and now I am only testing when I find something new. I was able to have Shreddies yesterday - previously they weren't too good about 6ish when I tested, but I had them at lunch and it was a 4.8. Today I have had porridge for breakfast and am going to test to see what the BGL is for that. I find the low carb ok ,but sometimes I do get a bit hungry so a cracker and some cheese helps. I am much calmer about the eating now as I understand better - portion size. Good luck and do keep on posting progress. Might try some brown rice next. What are these Tesco shakes?[/QUOTE]Hi Sharron -you are getting some really good readings - were they taken 2 hours after you had eaten? I think I'll give shreddies a go myself! I've found the carbs and calls book really glad to very quickly give you an idea of what carbs etc are in a wide variety of food. I also use the app version where I track what I eat and the total carbs etc...a bit painstaking but I can do it pretty quickly.

The Tesco shakes are what travellor used for the Newcastle diet (which is an 800 cal shake based diet). He can give you more details on what they are liked.

Sorry don't know what happened to the quote on that last post.

Sharron / 7.7 with the porridge still keeps you just within 'normal' post meal levels.
Eddy.. That's really good control managing to keep peaks to 8 +/- 1.3.

The Tesco shakes are just their own brand diet shake.
Their were savoury versions, but I used the chocolate, strawberry, or vanilla meal replacements.

(Portion size is always something I keep my eye on, but it's automatic now)

Just a quick update...just had my first 3 month review hba1c result. Down from diagnosis of 51 to 42 so pleased it's in the right direction!

Hi,
Well done you - was that achieved by diet and exercise only? I don't have a three month review I have to wait 6 months - which is a little bothersome as it would be nice to know what is going on. Although I do have the faithful food diary and self testing equipment! So is the advice carry on with the diet and exercise regime and see you next year?😎 I am still sticking with the mini shreddies but only in the afternoon and then I take a walk/ go shopping and do the testing later - for a reason (who knows why?) the walking and later testing does appear to lower the BGLs. I have stopped testing after most meals and only do it occasionally to see what is going on. Not sure if that is the right thing to do but it does seem the most sensible. The whole thing is a movable feast.

Thanks Sharon. yes just diet and exercise. As hba1c at diagnosis was relatively low, the DN give me the chance to control without meds. I've lost 48 pounds in the 3 months as well. It's a shame you have to wait 3 months to get tested..I'm hoping I'm not given the same interval till my next one..as you say your in the dark in the meantime. I also don't test a lot... just after certain meals that I feel may spike my blood more than usual and a fasting one once a week or so. If I wasn't getting as good readings I would probably do more I'm still not following a structured diet...that's next on my 'to do' list

Hi. I was diagnosed with T2 around 8 weeks ago (HBA1C of 51). Without symptoms I believe I should have had a second test within 2 weeks for to confirm diagnosis? but that never happened. I was told to try diet and exercise control without meds which I'm doing.

It hit me pretty hard.....correction really hard - but I got straight down to losing weight and getting more active and lost 2 1/2 stone in 7 weeks, restricting carbs to around 90 to 140g per day.

While in the chemists just over over a week ago the pharmacist offered to do me a random glucose test - it was 6.2 mmol/l.

A week later I got my own meter (SD Codefree) and on Monday gone got a pre-meal value of 5.8 and post meal 2 hours later of 6.1. The meal was beans on toast with around 43 carbs.

Following morning I got a 12 hour fasting reading of 5.2.

Today at 5 pm I had a meal of 57 carbs (including brown rice) and thought Id try a post meal test 2 hours later. Result was 6.7. Total carbs consumed up till then was 147g.

I don't plan doing too frequent testing as I'm trying my best not to dwell on it all too much as I'm finding it very self consuming.

Checking blood glucose range guidelines, these seem to be with the normal range (albeit at the upper end for some) and I'm cautiously optimistic - but my pessimistic side is telling me 'don't get carried away - I must be missing something!' and I'm thinking things like if I had a sunday lunch roast followed by treacle pud it would be a different story! and maybe the meter is reading low' - although looking through the forum it seems the SD Codefree has more of a tendency to read high.

I've still a long way to go with weight loss and hope to improve the blood levels further. Should I be celebrating or am I right to view all this with caution?

Thanks
Paul
Well done Paul 🙂

Well done you. The next thing is to keep to the menu! Although I find I do try other foods, nothing too adventurous, then I wait and test. I walk loads and do stretching exercises at home, hopefully that will keep everything on even keel. Good luck 🙂

Thanks...although I must confess that my paranoia over the whole thing has made it pretty easy so far! Yes I really need to sort out a proper diet rather than eating random low(ish) carb meals. I suppose it still leaves me room for further improvement. You're doing all the right things to get the best possible results for yourself...wishing you all the very best from all of your hard work.
