Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Dont know whats wrong with me, but i am really tired all of the time. I dont know if its anything to do with my diabetes or not. My boyfriend said that i slept really well lastnight, he said i went out like a light. But my eyes are burning and it feels like i had no sleep at all. I have been tired for a couple of months now, really drained. Does anyone else get this?

Hi Karen, i have had the same pretty much since diagnosis. I have recently had blood tests done to rule out other immune disorders. Should have results back soon. I also find i hypo during activity even with no quick acting insulin on board. Have been back and for to doctors always being told youre diabetic and adjusting. I kept telling them just because im diabetic i should not feel as tired as i do and unable to excercise because of hypos/exhaustion. Do you find you have unstable sugars along with this. I would definately contact your consultant to advise him of how you feel, and hopefully rule other things out.

Karen,
Hi what are your levels like lately?

Hi Brett.
I have just changed over to the 4 injections so my sugars are a little bit over the place at the moment anyway. Yeah my boyfriend is really worried about me, he said maybe it is something to do with the diabetes but to go to the doctor just to make sure, i just wanted to know if anyone else was getting the same feelings as me, or if it was just me. I have been Type 1 for 18 years now, its only the last couple of months i have been feeling like this.

How long have you been on MDI, and what sort of readings are you having pre and post meals and your first morning reading

Hi karen, sorry to hear this :( It may be related to your change of regime and your consequent fluctuating blood sugar levels - bear in mind that a non-diabetic person's blood sugar levels will always be kept in a very narrow range, so when we are going well above or bleow range our bodies and minds do not function at their best. It would be worth seeing your GP to see if perhaps you have a thyroid problem as I believe this can make you tired.

I'm very fortunate that my blood sugar levels are pretty good most of the time, so brett and karen I can say that just because you are diabetic does NOT mean that you will be tired all the time - I'm usually buzzing with energy, so don't let your doctors fob you off, it doesn't have to be that way.

Doesnt sound right to me ! I feel tired if i am "not" doing anything, & always prefer to be busy. 🙂

Lots of 10-14's would make me feel pretty tired (and grumpy too!)

Have you had your thyroid function tested recently/ever? Isn't that linked with tiredness?

Mike's right - those readings will make you tired. A lot of people in the medical profession seem prepared to write all sorts of things off as 'well, you would have that happen because you have diabetes'. Well-controlled diabetes is the leading cause of nothing.

What's your mood like as well? Fluctuating BGs are believed to have an impact on depression - which also has tiredness as a symptom.

Hi , have you asked your doctor about Chronic fatuige syndrome ? or post viral chronic fatuige , i have had chronic fatuige for 6 years and am completley drained most of the time the main symptom being non refreshing sleep... i could literally sleep for days and still feel like i havn't slept , it completley stops me in my tracks when it really flares up and i can do nothing but sleep , it is often made worse by bad blood sugars . this post caught my attention and sounded like me when i first started with CFS , mabey google it , the GP will always do test to rule out anything else but if they come back fine then they will probably suggest CFS.

Hi Karen,
are you saying that the tiredness started when you started MDI?
If this is the case then perhaps look at the insulin's you are now using.
It could just be that analogues don't suit you.
Having the higher numbers obviously will not help either. Have you been given any carb counting help and dose adjustment? If not then give your so called team a kick up the b.u.m. Also request they sort it promptly for you.
Other options to look at are thyroid function and anemia.
Do go to your GP though for a full check up.
Hope you feel better soon.

Might be best to go to docs and see if your anaemic as classic symptom is tiredness..hope they can sort you out soon 🙂
