i have been taken off metformin for a few days now because of pains in my the top half of my back, i was told my blood sugar would rise which i thought was fair enough,Yesterday my bs was 7.8 before breakfast and 7.3 before dinner great i thought,After not Having very Much to Eat last night Dinner was a curry +basmanti rice then later on two slices of toast i woke up this morning to fing that my bs had risen to 15.0 and now i have the pain in my back again i had bran flakes with canderal this morning for breakfast 1 hr later i took my reading could the bran flakes make my reading go that high? i noticed that there were 7grms sugar in a 30 grm bowl, i thought bran flakes were a good thing to have for breakfast?

Hi pikeking, there are quite a few carbohydrates in the food you describe - the rice and toast and also the bran flakes - you need to look for carb content, not just sugar. It might be an idea to try and cut back on the carbs whilst you are off the metformin - perhaps try things like scrambled egg or omelettes, protein based foods that won't affect your levels. If possible, try and get some exercise as this will help keep your levels in check too.

I don't know tbh steff - I just eat them when I fancy them. I went through a period where I would have two soft-boiled eggs a day with toast soldiers every day - aah!!!🙂 I know that there was some fuss a while ago about limiting the number of eggs you eat, but I think it applies more if you're pregnant or something. There was a fuss about the cholesterol in eggs also, but most of the cholesterol in our bodies is produced by our bodies, so that was also a bit of an unnecessary scare. I've eaten eggs regularly throughout my life and as far as I know they haven't done me any harm!

As one of ours ducks has been laying an egg a day since Friday, looks like we'll be eating more through the summer... And might eat one of the male ducks...

hmm well i will find out then i dont want it causing me any bother , i will stick to 2 for now

There's an article in the July issue of Sainsbury's Magazine: 'Take Heart' and within it it says: Good news for egg lovers: "not only has the British Heart Foundation changed its advice about to have only 4 eggs a week, because indulging in more will not raise your blood cholesterol, but Canadian researchers have now discovered that proteins unique to eggs could help to improve blood flow and blood pressure....studies also show that a 2-egg breakfast is so filling that it helps us to eat 400 calories fewer over the rest of the day...."

So, looks like you can carry on with your breakfasts Northerner and Steff! Clever chickens eigh?

I think shredded Wheat and Puffed wheat are the only cereals with no added sugar (or salt). I eat these, wholemeal bread toast, or porridge with a smattering of dried cranberries or tinned prunes in juice, and seeds, cinnamon. the fuirt and marmalade (I don't use the low sugar variety) does push up the BSs, but I have these on a day I'm going to do some serious excercise, which will use up the excess, or compenstae with insulin.
