Ok, before I was diagnosed a couple of weeks ago, I loved my real ale. Still do. Never been a heavy drinker, but like the odd one or two at a weekend. I've searched the internet but can only seem to find carb info about lager. If I was to hazard a guess I'd say that stronger = better (less sugar). Anyone got a more informed opinion?

Not type 1, so hypos aren't a concern. As far as carbs go, looks like I'll need to be drinking on an empty stomach if I want beer 🙂

As I play in a band, not drinking at all may be a problem, it's kind of expected. Maybe I'll go for pints of diet coke with a couple of shots of whisky in on gig nights...

Sounds like a plan 😉

Would it be micro brewery ale, or large brewery types? Just thinking that if they are 'reasonable sized' breweries - then the brewery would be able to help with the actual carb value?

You shouldn't ever drink alcohol on an empty stomach - even though you aren't doing it till you're blotto - more as an 'appropriate to your surroundings' thirst quencher really.

Just wonderin like, why would the diet Coke have to have any alcohol in it? I mean just because you don't have alcohol one night - or indeed every night when you're playing - doesn't announce you've completely packed it in, now does it?

I get terribly nervous when I first go on stage, even though I've been doing it for years and am alright by about the third song - silly I know, but then I'm quite happy picking up spiders however large they may be and throwing them out the front door while the missus is cowering by the back door in case they escape 🙂 I usually find a couple of pints necessary for the old Dutch courage, can't see that changing, just have to find a "safe" alternative now I guess.

I have been a semi pro muso as well and had a take it or leave it relationship with booze even if unlimited freebies were on offer. In the early days I couldn't drink before a gig because I'd have thrown it straight up. Nowadays the nerves have gone.
