I am different because I have Type 1 rather than type 2.
But my experience maybe relevant (or not).
I find I need both insulin and food.
If I do not eat, my liver still thinks I am starving myself so continues to dump glucose causing my BG to rise.
And, as my body produces no (or very very very little) insulin, I also need to add that.
I don't need to eat much; just enough to convince my liver that I will not starve and it can stop the glucose dump.
(In the past, when I have mentioned this, a member with type 2 requested citations from research papers to explain this phenomenon. I have none - I just have personal experience which may be different with Type 1 or I may just be odd.)
