My question is that when i was first diagnosed they said that the longer you have diabetes the less you will have warning signs when you hypo, untill you loose the signs all togeather.. Is this true or will everybody be differant etc ?
Thanks

It depends on you levels and how well controlled you are.
The body adjusts to what is 'comfortable'. If you mostly run high, you can feel hypo even at high levels. If you are often low you can lose hypo awareness.

It's been known for some people who have lost hypo awareness to regain it after running high for a little while.

Having said that, everyone is different.

Hi 🙂

I always find that if my sugars are constantly running low then I lose hypo awareness. But usually running a bit higher for a few days sorts that out. Like now, I've got that horrible tingly effect on the lips going on 😱

Sometimes though, I dont notice if i'm going low. And I hate that!

It can vary vastly from person to person . I have excellent hypo awareness but when I was ill with Swine Flu and a Kidney Infection I lost hypo Awareness and caught a few low ones 1+'s accidently. Once I was fully recovered I regained it though >>Phew. I know alot of long term Diabetics who still have their awareness . 🙂🙂

Funnily enough, I was just reading about this and found out some thing I didn't know. What everyone has said is true, but apparently what can also happen is that after a long time with diabetes (probably decades) your body does not respond as well with the other hormones - the stress hormones that cause the shakes and sweats do not get produced as readily and this can therfore lead to a decreased awareness of low sugars.

I believe that people can lose the stress hormone responses which are most prominent and what most people pick up on, but they can keep the more brain type symptoms so just need to be careful to look out for other symptoms.

I had a period a couple of years ago when I caught a few lows and didn't feel low, managed to get good warning back by avoiding hypo's at all for a short while.

Two years ago, i could be walking about in a complete daze and not even know that i was low. It ended up with me having a fit in bed one night while i was sleeping. I had been diabetic for 23 years at the time. The hospital advised me to run a little higher for a few weeks and not has as tight control. This worked and my warning signs came back. Sugar levels also went back to normal after a few weeks. I was a little worried running them high but i was terrified I would fit again. It was a horrible, horrible experience. But I got there in the end.🙂
