Query about eye test and new glasses.

I was diagnosed with diabetes nearly two weeks ago and had an eye test yesterday and have a prescription for new glasses. I’ve been testing my blood sugars before dinner and two hours afterwards and most of my readings have been in the normal range or slightly into the high range, highest 11.3 after dinner. I am managing diabetes by reducing carbs, exercise and intermittent fasting.

Should I postpone getting new glasses for a while. The back of my eyes were looking healthy and when I said I had recently been diagnosed with diabetes I was asked if I wanted to wait before getting new glasses but said I would go ahead and wasn’t really discouraged from doing so. Have paid for the glasses and due to collect them next week, but don’t really want to if my eyesight is likely to change.

Any advice greatly appreciated

You shouldn’t get glasses for at least 3 months after a diagnosis as your eyes may change, but it might be too late now you’ve paid. Speak to them to see what’s possible?

If yountold your optician about your recent diagnosis then they were very remiss at prescribing new glasses. Your eyes can change during the early stages of getting your blood glucose better managed.
The environment in the eye will be 'sugary' if your blood glucose is high so the shape is altered but it will have happened slowly but as you levels come down from lifestyle changes and /or medication then the eye environment will change back to more normal salty and the eye shape will return to more normal.
Once it has settled down you may not even need new glasses.

Thank you Leadinglights. How long would you recommend I should have my blood sugars controlled ( guessing that means normal range most of the time?) before I get retested?

Everybody will be different in how long it takes their eyes to settle down, reducing blood glucose gradually will help reduce the effect on your eyes. For some people it may be just a few weeks others several months, for me it was about 7 months.
They really should have advised you to wait before getting the new glasses.

Good that you have a monitor so you can check meals clearly the result of 11 was not too good, your aim would be no more than 8-8.5mmol/mol 2 hours post meal.

Thanks once again. I have just checked the spec savers website and it looks like there’s a 100 day period during which they will sort out any problems with glasses. If it’s too late to cancel now that will hopefully give time for thing to get sorted out.

Specsavers gave me glasses without prism - they told me that they had checked with my pervious optician and that my eyes would soon get used to the new prescription.
I kept clipping the curb when driving - I could have killed someone. I went back to my old opticians and they were horrified - also they never had a phone call from Specsavers. They always note it on their records when they are consulted by another company.

Just phoned Spec savers and they are refunding the money and cancelling the glasses so I’m very happy . Will wait till after my next HbA1c test and diabetes review to get another eye test

Good result @Morning bird !

Were you aware of changes to your vision before your diagnosis? Were things looking a little blurry?
