Hi
my 12 yr old daughter is getting a pump after 15months of MDI type 1 diabetes. On offer Animas vibe or medtronic 640G, what are peoples experience ???

Great to hear that your daughter is getting a pump. I don't have experience of either of the pumps you mention, but know what a positive difference the switch to a pump from MDI made. A lot to do at the start of pumping but well worth it.
 
Turned down initially for a pump but after her honeymoon period ended her night time sugars spiked significantly resulting in night time testing and further QA insulin being needed.
Hoping the pump will give her better nocturnal control.

Hi Jane and welcome to the forum.
Both pumps are very good and both have CGM compatibility, which ever your daughter chooses will be just right for her because she will not have had another pump to compare with. I have the vibe and have no issues with it
 
Mike - @everydayupsanddowns has a Medtronic which he loves. I had the Roche Combo first and now have their Insight - and as Sue says - it doesn't actually matter which one you get first - because the degree of control we all have over our D with any pump is so hugely greater than with MDI - we always love them. (- after getting over the first hump when the initial euphoria has worn off and we realise we haven't yet got to grips with the intricacies and subtle nuances of this new gadget - at which point some of us are tempted to throw them out of the window LOL

Persevere! - it gets not exactly easier - but you start getting accustomed to how they work to do what they do, so it once more becomes a habit same as MDI did. It's the comparison between using a JCB with a grab on the end of the jib and a pair of tweezers, to pluck your eyebrows with! May be more fiddly - but does the job SOOOOOOO much better !
 
Hello, I first had the Accu-Chek Combo too....hated it! However, I now have the 640g and I love it....even comes in pink haha 😉 x
 
I have the 640g. Only had it since November but I love it.
Some things I like are being able to set an alarm (in my case just a vibration) to remind me to test after eating.
It's simple to use (but I have no experience with any other pump).
I like the remote bolus option from my testing meter especially if I'm wearing something that doesn't make getting my pump out particularly easy or dignified!

The difference from MDI is incredible and I feel v lucky to have the opportunity to have it.

I had some major teething issues but since finding a cannula that suits me I haven't looked back!

Remote bolus??? I didn't think ours could do that... I was always told we couldnt??

Oh wow thank you all for your responses it's so nice to have advice from people that understand it first hand. We have to go to pump school to learn how to use the pump safely etc so may still be a few months away before she has her "pink" pump and I can say goodbye to 02.00 insulin injections

If you have the paired Contour Next Link 2.4 meter you can remote bolus with it, though it doesn't have the full bolus wizard like the pump does. Several options though and v useful as a standby
 
That's one of the things I liked for the Combo and like for the Insight - hardly ever need to touch the pump itself, just the meter/handset so much of the time.

The Combo was 'clunky' - and the reservoirs far too big, hence the pump was too big.

I wouldn't care what colour my pump was - as long as it wasn't pink. Not a colour I universally like and never have. Certain shades of the dusky variety are OK but can easily be such an awfully sickly colour. It would drive me bats having to keep the awful thing totally hidden - pink of any shade doesn't go with everything esp the strong colours I favour. eg Bright red.

With 6 granddaughters and one great - I've had an enforced period of overdose for far too long and it's ongoing - youngest was only 1 the other day! One of them discussing with me whatever it was she wanted for Xmas, What's your favourite colour? (knowing the answer) Pink, Grandma. What if they haven't got any pink ones - what's your second favourite then? Totally gobsmacked face, followed by thoughtful. Then she said, Pink, Grandma. LOL Aaaaarrgghh .....

Yes that is the one thing I miss from the combo is the remote...it is quite annoying having to get the pump out especially if I am wearing a dress.

No I gave the money to her mother to get whatever, since I visibly shudder at a rack of pink garments LOL Warning: Shoppers are asked not to retch whilst shopping here .......

I'm with @trophywench on pink! My 640g is purple at the moment. Luckily I don't do dresses very often. I much prefer the 640g to the Insight - seems like greased lightning in comparison😱🙂
