Hey, I'm a student with Type 1 Diabetes, and I'm finding it a bit unwieldy to carry my passport everywhere for ID - most of my friends have provisional licenses, but I've heard they're not easy to get with diabetes from some people. It is quite a lot of money to apply, and I don't want to waste it if it's unlikely I'll actually get approved. Has anyone else here had any experience with this?

Not sure where you heard they’re difficult to get, they’re not. You’re only declined for reasons such as if diabetes complications mean you have severe vision loss or you have hypo unawareness, or if you’ve had hypos needing the help of other people. If you’ve lost use of your legs through diabetes complications you can still drive but may need the car adapting for hand controls.

Are you in the U.K. @CaliUberDriver ? If so, you just apply for a provisional licence like normal and put the info about Type 1 diabetes on the form. If you have hypo awareness and haven’t had severe hypos, you should be fine.

If you’re outside the U.K., then you’ll need to check with the issuing authority there.

Hello, another option for a proof of age ID card could be something like this? https://www.citizencard.com/

I assumed so as they can’t actually be an Uber driver in California if they don’t even have a provisional driving licence, so must just be a username

It was that and the spelling of licence as license that made me wonder, along with the time of posting. I guess you’re right else they’d have said.

My son needs to apply for his provisional licence. Do we need to get his consultant or nurse etc to fill anything in on the forms?

I don't believe so - when renewing, we have to tell the DVLA the names and working addresses of both our GP and our hospital consultant. Then, if they wish to ask either of em a question, they contact the doc themselves.
