Hi all - although this is really aimed at Deux as I know he is a fot of knowledge about noodle products 😉

a sporty T1 has seen these advertise:

https://www.barenakedfoods.co.uk/products

No nutritional info on the site but they emailed him with the following per 100g -
Energy 8kcals
Protein 0.3g
Fat 0.1g
Carbohydrates 0.1g
Sugars 0.1g
Dietary fibre 3.4g
Sodium 2g

He would like any information/advice from others, especially those who have tried them. He is a sporty athlete (hence he's picked them up as they are high protein) so please bear that in mind when replying!

thanks 🙂

There was a thread about this a few days ago. It would be interesting if they've emailed your friend the actual ingredients, as these aren't on their website. My view is that there are surely many far better sources of protein for sports people to eat. This product also contains excessive levels of salt.

thanks redkite - can you recall what the thread was called? just checekd most recent ones on here and couldn't see anything. i'm looking in the wrong palce no doubt!

Can't remember sorry! I think it was about barenaked foods being on Dragons Den...

oooh found it thanks!! although seems as though the majority response was 'why bother'!! lol 😉

Not so sure these are high protein - they're 0.3% protein, which isn't really a lot.

I'm guessing these are probably the same thing as shiritake noodles - these are made from konjac, which I can only describe as 'a plant'.

I actually think shiritake noodles are great but they can be quite expensive. I know of lot of people think "Why bother? They don't have anything in them." For me, that's precisely why I bother. They're a great way to completely de-carb and de-calorise anything with noodles. In texture, they're usually like glass noodles (although these ones look more 'doughy'). They are great for doing a good chow mein and really, really good in noodle soup as they don't go gloopy like regular noodles.

When you think about it, noodles are basically like rice - they're a delivery mechanism for the actual meal you want to eat. So in much the same way you might want to swap rice for cauli rice, you might want to swap out noodles for shiritake noodles. They will make you feel full without actually giving you many calories at all, so they're great for weight loss and they're great for not messing with your blood sugar.

The only downer is they smell a bit funny when you first get them out the packet - 'fishy' is one description. But if you rinse them and then cook with them, they are fine - they just absorb all the flavour of whatever else it is you're cooking.

So yeah, basically I think they're great. My advice would be to just get one or two packs before dropping ?20 on noodles - give them a try first to see if you like them. Low Carb Megastore stock them, and if you google shiritake noodles you'll probably be able to find other sources. Some Asian supermarkets may also stock them as well.

thanks Deus! will pass this on - very helpful 🙂

For an athlete though, I wouldn't recommend these. They're just fibre and water, so they're no good for muscle repair and they're no good for energy either. They're simply a low-calorie, low-carbohydrate bulking agent, which is fine for most of us but probably not ideal for a sportsman.

Interesting stuff. I eat stir fries at least twice a week with morrisons noodles. 35g for a desent helping & nice. Fish for protein 🙂

yeah that's what i told him Deus.

Wow wow wow!

I've just had a delivery of shiritake noodles, and I'm a convert. I will always prefer the very highest carb wheat noodles, but these are acceptable as a carb-free alternative. Now I've just got to find a Chinese supermarket within cycling distance (delivery is a bit pricey for my current finances).
