Given that there is a constant stream of misreported and misinformed nonsense about diabetes on TV, what types of programmes do you think would work best and get the real facts across to the general public? Let's know your ideas - it could be a cookery programme (e.g. Come Dine with me), a documentary (Horizon, Panorama, etc.), a medical-style programme etc.

I think that something vaguely along the lines of 'Supersize/Superskinny', but instead having 'Type1/Type2'. Now, before you all start screaming at me, I don't mean a programme centred around weight at all, but the different treatments and methods used to manage the diabetes, the origins, the successes, triumphs and failures. People of different types could work with each other to understand the different approaches and help each other to get good control, and maybe a non-diabetic person or two could also follow the program of diet and activity so they (and the public) could get a proper understanding of what it all means and entails. There could be segments that speak about the lesser known types, like 1.5 and MODY too. Even better if they could have some celebs involved! 🙂

I think this sounds like a great idea. I wonder if Dr Christian Jessen would be interested 🙂 Now if it's not focussed around weight I'm hoping that means the 2 people don't have to stand there in their underwear as well 😛
Weight obviously will come into it at some point, but I agree that this should not be anything like the main focus of the show. Having celebs involved would be a huge thing as it helps people realise that it can happen to anyone.
A more practical look at the treatments used and why they AREN'T a waste of money for a lot of diabetics to be using them. A section which highlights the false and misleading reports that come from the media would be a must as well.

brilliant idea Alan.

I do think DUK should carry on publicity after the show with 'Did you know' adverts or posters in placers, to keep people thinking about it.

And surely we'd be able to get more undiagnosed people diagnosed as well....

I'd love to be involved in someway if I could....

Perhaps there could be a small segment when one of the mad 'cures' could be exposed, like left nostril breathing or stamping on melons (yes, I haven't made that up, although someone else has! 😱) - maybe not the drinking bleach one though... 🙂

I think it would be a great idea.

Hopefully it could dispel the many myths surrounding Diabetes and make people aware of the difficulties - particularly, in a week where a young lassie died during the night.

Great idea!

I would vote for a Horizon/Panorama type programme. As I said earlier in the other thread about Diabetes on Loose Women, TV information must be put out to the general public. I haven't had any negative messages from anyone, well not to my face anyway. We need the top people in Diabetes Care, satistics, people with the different types of Diabetes, including people who take care of their own diabetes, family life, plus carers for children, adolescents and adults. The Hypers, the Hypo's, how we get on with it, food we can eat etc, etc. If there were celebraties involved, then I think Sir Steve Redgrave would be an asset. But from the outset it should be fair and factual. Sheena

I also think any medical 'experts' who are chosen/asked to go on the programme should have their opinions screened by this forum first!! The last thing we need is a dr giving out what they think is right, when actually, we all know it's wrong.

Alan - please let me know if there is anything you want me to do.
