Last October I was diagnosed Type 2 with a HbA1c of 119 mmol/mol and 93+kg (I did not have any scales at the time!). I have since been on and still currently on Metformin, 2 tablets with breakfast and 2 with my evening meal. Now 9 months on my HbA1c is now 44 mmol/mol and I am 86kg and still on a downward trend. The only downside is that I need to buy new clothes :rofl:.

So how did I get to this point since diagnosis. Before going further this is my specific approach and other people may find other ways that better suit them. One of the changes was in my diet. I did not go on any specific diet plan or calorie counting as this does not work for me and just puts me off. What I did do was cut out snacks, switch to healthier foods types of what I was already eating, introduce some low or reduced sugar foods and generally eat smaller portions than I used to. I still eat potatoes, rice (though brown rice and much more yummier) and normal pasta, but as I said smaller amounts. Though with potatoes I have found that I eat significantly less than I used to with a lot of meals where I would normally have spuds I no longer have them. So perhaps I have fallen into a low carb diet but not by following a specifically designed one. I have not cut out any food type that I was eating prior to diagnosis but I am more conscious of what I eat now. Between meals, and sometimes even afterwards, I can still feel hungry but I put up with that as a) it show my eating habits are working and I feel a lot healthier and b) my stomach is still being trained to being used to less food. A cup of tea (or other liquid) helps alleviate the hunger pangs if I feel the need to, which is not often.

The other change was an increase in excercise. I was doing a lot of brisk walking prior to diagnosis to get fit again, after a few years of doing a small amount, and was in the process of loosing weight (I had lost a few inches from my waist) at the time of diagnosis. It was this that had probably saved me from being a medical emergency at the time though at this stage my undiagnosed diabetes was now impacting on my ability to walk more frequently. So in the months since diagnosis I have slowly increased the amount of walking I do in both frequency and time. Typically when I go for my morning walks now they are around 2hrs and 6 to 8 miles. I have the benefit of being retired so I have the time for this but if I had been still working I would have done some other form of excercise that could be fitted in better with a working life. I do not walk every day but around 45% of each month.

At my assessment today it was stated that with my current rate of progress that my dosage of metformin may be reduced at the next assessment.🙂

So anyone who has recently been diagnosed with type 2 hopefully my story so far may help you and please free to ask me any questions about my approach. But I should point out that the way I have tackled my diabetes is specifically my own way of doing it and that you may find other ways that work better for you. Though the main principles of managing your diet and excercise is still the key in dealing with your diabetes as well as your general health and wellbeing.
