Hi all, I was wandering about probiotic drinks - good or bad? I have mild IBS and was thinking about trying them to see if they settle my tummy down.

I have IBS and have tried them. For me personally they did make me worse. But i know for some they work. I guess you have to really try to know how it will help you 🙂

Hi cokecan

I have IBS to and like Mrs M I didn't find probiotic drinks helpful, and you have to be careful because some have a fair bit of sugar. I do find probiotics in general useful though, but I make yoghurt which is full of the stuff (easiyo is good and easy, and Lakeland do a yoghurt maker) you can control the sugar content then and it's fresh so the bacteria is at it's liveliest. There's also a supplement I used recently called probio7 which is good. The thing is if you have a gut bacteria imbalance probiotics can make it worse to start with because the bad bacteria has to die off so it can be tricky. I had a lot of fungal infections prior to my diagnosis so my doctor was pretty convinced I have an imbalance. Might be worth a chat to your doctor to see what they say? I know there are a lot of people who think IBS is linked to Candida but not sure the medical profession agree 🙂

It would be a lot cheaper to buy the capsules from a health food shop rather than spend money on the drinks. Added bonus no extra sugar or carbs 🙂

Put it this way.

It is illegal for any probiotic drink manufacturer to make any claims about the efficacy of their drinks in treating identified medical conditions, because it is against the law to make any medical claims for a product without being able to provide scientific evidence.

That alone should tell you exactly how effective they actually are!

They're also always advertised at the same time as the laxatives and the trapped wind products, which makes me suspect that what really happens is that women suffer quite a lot of adverse effects from the social pressures to never fart or poop.

They do absolutely nothing for me either. As I said before regarding supplements, if you have a decent, varied diet you shouldn't need any of this stuff. If you have plumbing difficulties, they aren't likely to help much, if at all. Don't waste your money Cokecan.
