Has anybody seen a private diabetic consultant as I’ve not seen a nurse or a doctor in the last six months I’m thinking if I go to see a consultant privately not sure what to do

If you have money to burn, and if you can find one. There isn’t really a market for diabetes consultants. Expect to pay between £150 and £200 for a first appointment. It rather depends on what you need from an appointment.

I see a consultant diabetes specialist every 6 months at the moment, that’s NHS, at the local “cottage” hospital. They log on to my LibreView data to inform the discussion. That’s the same hospital I get my eye screening- the most recent was last month, no problems found. The only reason I go to these appointments is to persuade them to give me a pump, to be honest.

What do you hope to gain from seeing a private consultant? I think that is the question you need to ask yourself...

A member here recently did just this as she was having difficulty with balancing her basal insulin dose with her needs. They changed her to a different basal which didn't suit her and there was no follow up to support her and she ended up changing back to the original basal insulin with help from members of the forum here, so you could say that it was a waste of money.... although she did get to try a different basal and rule that out but at significant cost I imagine.

You can get an HbA1c test done privately without a consultant appointment if you are wanting a progress update on how the changes you have made to lifestyle are working. That would be a much cheaper option.

As regards not seeing a GP or nurse, there is far more information and experience available on this forum than most local GP surgery clinicians can offer. Good diabetes management is more about you learning the best way to manage your condition through trial and improvement than any general guidance that HCPs can give you who have no idea what you eat and drink or how much you exercise/physical activity you do in your day to day life, especially when you only see them for 10-15 mins once every 6months to a year.

I think gone are the days when your diabetes was managed for you with the Doctor or nurse visiting to give you your insulin. So it is all in getting the information to allow self management of your condition and you can probably do no better than take the advice you will find on this site from people who have such patience and expertise gained from managing their own condition. Because everybody is different it is difficult to give a set of rules which would suit everybody even with the same type of diabetes. Not an easy minefield to cross.

Thank you I will wait and see my gp or nurse
