Someone called me a drain on the nhs a few years back, don't think I've quite forgiven her yet! For some reason that one really got to me, other comments that I get from time to time don't really bother me... But of course if I or anyone else who is diabetic says it then it's fine! 😉

😱😱 That's evil!! It would really upset me too! and think i'd have to stick up for myself... with some swearing!

Hi everyone

Many thanks for all your replies. I am now going to ask if i can have double quantity of what i currently get each time so that hopefully, like many of you, i can just go once a month.

As Patricia says, on the pump you have to test lots, at least at first anyway. My son does between 6 and 10 tests per day so we get through a fair few strips and lancets!

So sorry Aymes that someone made that unfair and unkind comment. At least all you diabetics, and us parents of diabetic kiddies, know you are worth every penny! 😉 🙂

Katie - that is such a typical 'brother' remark! Hehehe! Bet he loves you loads really!! :D

Thanks again everyone! 🙂

Hello,

Funny you should ask - they asked today at clinic and I said 11 years, consultant checked notes and it said December 1996 so thats 13 years. Oops!

Having done DAFNE, they're very much just 3 times a day, and an extra one before bed if you want to check basal/fasting levels.

However, I know a lot of people on here test before and after meals so that would instantly double the amount of test strips you'd need.

@TraceyW - 50 tests in 4 days!! Thats 12 tests a day, or about 1 an hour for every hour you're awake!! EDIT: Sorry never realised you're a pumper - that makes more sense 😉

NiVZ

no worries, am doing lots of testing at the mo! have done dafne too but average around 6 tests a day usually as i drive, excercise etc.

Wow I absolutely cannot imagine 3x a day...but then you can't do that on a pump...because there is no background insulin, and if something goes wrong you get pretty poorly pretty quick, as we found out last weekend...

I think we get 300 strips and 300 lancets, 4 bottles of insulin, as and when. We tend to go once a month or so, and change lancet each time...I know, I know, a bit OTT maybe...

We come to this by requesting higher amounts from our GP.

Tracey: you *need* strips! It's part of your pump care. You could be in deep doo-doo if you don't have an adequate supply. For us, it was actually part of our prescription letter that E had to test often, and a requirement for getting on the pump that we test often...

I know Particia, i even spoke to gp about my pump the other day when i requested more strips, he was totally disinterested in my pump to be honest, which i thought was poor as he cant see too many im sure 😡

haha my lil brother said to me the other day "why dont you just save the NHS some money and die!!"

(he was joking dont worry)

I know he said that !! i saw it on Facebook !! what a meanie :(:( you'd better warn him he may not be immune to DB just because he hasnt got it yet !! mwahhhahahaha 😉

400 x test strips per month
2 boxes lancets per month
bottles of humalog for pump - not sure how many yet!

Think thats it - although i will be asking for some cavilon cream for the canula site.
Tracey - we have gone from testing approx 7 times a day - to approx 12 times a day - this is due to night testing and the extra tests after a set change etc.. If i were you i would order tons of strips - you will go through them a lot more!🙂😉Bev

Hehe I know exactly what you mean !! I've had the comment a few times and it does cut deep :( The thing is I think people forget I'm not on Smack or methodone or any other drug ! Insulin was'nt a choice it was necessary if I wanted to live. I dont smoke and I'm not obese or an alcoholic so I dont know why I'm frowned upon for my prescriptions ,even my doctor used to be funny with me if I ordered Insulin before he thought I should need it ! Grrr

My take on it is that I put a lot more into the system in terms of tax than I take out.

Have come to this thread a bit late but have just had a run in with receptionist at Dr's surgery so am fuming. Have been trying to get extra test strips as am testing J alot at the moment and am working so don't have time to go to dr's every week to get repeat prescription, explained this to receptionist who said that they have a prescribing budget and that the strips are very expensive so I can't have as many as I want! After trying not to smack her in the face ( i am a placid girl really!) I calmly explained that J is 8, newly diagnosed and on insulin, also he's at school so need extra kit to leave there. She then said was I testing unnecssarily??!! Cos I love jabbing my little boy with a lancet 5/6 times a day.......agggghhhh. Anyway I told her I wanted it and expected it to be on the presription and walked out!!!
Sorry to rant but for heavens sake who did she think she was???
Caryn 😡

What the hell? so the receptionist now has a medical degree and can tell you that testing that much is unnecessary?! I really hate GP receptionists. Surely they must understand that people who go to see them possibly have a serious medical condition or are feeling really ill, so why be rude?! I once went to the drs for an appointment and I had a really really horrible cold (that's not why I went, I had been waiting 2 weeks for the appointment!), then the receptionist told me off for being early?! So I cried lol.

Argh, this makes me so mad!!

Our run in was with the pharmacist, who fortunately had no say over the amount of strips we are prescribed. SUCH IGNORANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sorry you had to go through it. As if there isn't enough to be stressed and get upset about.

They are a law unto themselves- although I'm sure there are lots of lovely, helpful ones out there too!!!! Hehe!

Doesn't the more test strips you get = more money for the pharmasist?!?!

This makes me fume too! They're not doctors and don't know the first thing about your child's situation! Grrr! Here's a revival of my poem 'The Rude Receptionists' - sounds like they might work at your surgery!😱🙂

The Rude Receptionists

?I?ve filled up my sharps bin, can I give it to you??
?I?m not sure if we take them, I don?t think that we do!
I?ll just wait for Elsie, till she?s done on the phone,
I don?t want to make the decision alone.?

?Ah look! See, she?s finished ? Elsie, what do you think?
If we took in this sharps bin, would they kick up a stink??
?No, I don?t think we take them, we ought to ask Kate?
I don?t think she?s here yet, she?s coming in late.?

?Do you think you could come back when there?s more of us here?
We can?t make the decision, I know it sounds queer.
It?s more than our job?s worth! When we got employed
We were told all the things we?re supposed to avoid.?

?Like being efficient, polite and at ease,
We?re supposed to ignore you and do as we please.
And if you get angry and kick up a fuss,
We?ll tell all and sundry that you wear a truss!?

?And if you should happen to come in here ill
We?ll make you stand waiting ? it gives us a thrill!
There?ll be no appointments if you need to be seen ?
We?re supposed to be grumpy, obstructive and mean.?

?Could you move to the side please? I think I saw Kate!
Perhaps you?d move quicker if you lost some of that weight!
Ah Kate! Can you tell me before you go in,
Do you ever remember us taking a bin??

?I don?t think we take them.? ?No, that?s what I thought.?
?Be patient now, madam, please don?t get distraught!?
?Perhaps if we rang up Elaine in supplies??
?She might not have time ? she?s up to her eyes!?

?Oh please will you take it? I?ve been here an hour!
Perhaps I could talk to someone with more power??
?There?s Dr. Fitzmichael, I think he will know?
Too late ? that?s his Volvo! I just saw it go!?

?Well?perhaps we could take it, and when he gets back
We?ll find out if that?s why Janine got the sack?
No! Don?t pass it over! I might get infections!
We have to take care with all our collections!?

?Elsie, pass me those gloves, and Kate - you watch out!
You have to be careful with addicts about!
That is why you?ve got this? Because you take drugs?
I wouldn?t let your type drink out of our mugs!?

?Now, pass it me slowly, are you sure it?s tight shut?
Imagine if one of those stuck in my foot!
Goodbye! No, you?re welcome ? I hope that you?ve learned
We?d rather this wasn?t where your bins are returned?!?

:D

why is it my name only rhymes with weight and skate? 🙄

I love that peom, it's one of my favs. it should be handed to all GP receptionists!

Just rang up to make an appointment for next week before I head home. The receptionists at my surgery use your birthday as additional proof of who you are and I've just been informed that my birthday is next Monday, not this Friday (that's not a hint by the way). Eh? Some fool been mucking about with the records then? Cos it was right when I was in last week. "Are you sure it's the 25th" she asked me. "No of course I'm not you fool, I've only had 52 years to learn the date of my birth, not nearly long enough is it?"* 🙄

*I didn't actually say that out loud you understand.
