Relationship to Diabetes
At risk of diabetes
Hi there. I’ve just dipped in here as my recent blood test reveals that my blood sugar is 6.1 which doesn’t mean a thing. I was diagnosed as prediabetic last year when blood sugar was 5.7. No one has told me at what number it has to reach to become full blown T2 diabetic. I’m trying very hard to lose weight at the moment but obviously not hard enough. Any advice would be great. Thanks

Hi @Blogger it sounds as though you've been given your result as a percentage rather than in mmol which is on a scale of 30-100+.

I think 6.1 = 43 but someone else will confirm, I've no doubt.

For ref:
under 42 = normal
42-48 = pre-diabetic
48+ = diabetic (6.5%)

With scores like that, a few tweaks to your diet may be all that is required but you mentioned weight loss as well. Have you much to lose?

I think 6.1 might be your fasting glucose? In which case I think over 7 is diagnosis of diabetes. Either way if you’re in the prediabetic range then some changes to diet and exercise may help bring it down

Ah, thank you so much. That’s helped a lot. I’m about 3 stone overweight but would realistically like to lose 1 1/2 stones. Doing S/World but need to keep carbs down.

Thank you. This has been a reality check so definitely a change in diet and exercise

Welcome back @Blogger

I’ve split your post into it's own thread so that replies to you don’t get muddled with @Daffyduck 🙂

Sorry to hear you aren’t getting very clear information from your HCPs, I really wish people weren’t given results in numbers without specifying the units, because lots of these numbers and ranges overlap and can be expressed in old units or new units... and it makes it very hard for people to interpret the information they are being given!

Sounds like youve been working on cutting back on your carbs since last year. How is SW working out? And did you get yourself a BG meter to check your response to different meals and foods?

Thank you for that. I’ve just received my BG monitor and will keep a check. Really struggling with the weight. S/W just doesn’t work for me. I’ve really upped my exercise regime and hope it helps
