Hi, I've just discovered this website so have joined, even though I am pre diabetic it looks like there is a lot of useful information on the site.

@SueNils welcome to the forum. This is a great place for information and advice. If you are at risk then even small changes to your diet, exercise and lifestyle will probably have a big impact on reducing your risk of actually being diagnosed as diabetic.

Hi @SueNils and welcome to to forum

Alan 😉

Thanks Jimmy and Alan. I've already picked up some useful info and website addresses.

It's a great site for all things diabetes, just ask the questions and someone will give you the answers.

What was your HbA1c @SueNils if you don't mind me asking

I found everything in the Freshwell program made absolute sense and I followed the principals there. You are in prediabetic zone and it will depend on how near the upper end you are as to how much you will need to do but do look at the link to see if anything there would suit you. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/

Don't have the figures in front of me ....and won't for a bit ...

They really should have told you when they gave you your diagnosis, so worth a phone call to ask or if you have access to results on the Patient app it should be on there.

Welcome to the forum @SueNils

Hope you find it a helpful and supportive environment where you can pick up some tips and shared experiences from people who have been where you are.

Keep asking away with any questions as they arise. Nothing will be considered too obvious or ‘silly’ 🙂

Yes I have the figures - I was just busy doing something else when asked!
HbA1c 42 mmol/mol hence pre diabetic. I have been following the NHS Oviva app since the beginning of Octber 2024 and feel like I'm doing OK. Off to bed now so will see any replies in the morning.

Ah OK, so you are just at the lowest level of the ‘at risk’ spectrum.

That may mean that just a few relatively modest tweaks and changes to your menu could have a significant impact in steering your BG away from a diabetes diagnosis.

Losing weight, especially weight carried around the middle, can help imprive insulin sensitivity. And slightly moderating portions of carbohydrates, plus cutting out obvious sweets, biscuits, sugary foods etc could really help.

It’s not necessarily about living like a monk, and avoiding everything for ever, but some manageable modest changes, and cutting right back on the frequency of the obvious sweet stuff can create a sustainable new ‘way of eating’ that you can stick to without feeling deprived.

And a warm welcome from me too @SueNils 🙂. As mentioned, it may just be a case of making a few changes to your diet that could make such a difference. Please do reach our for advice, info etc. we're a helpful bunch here!

Welcome to the forum

Hi @SueNils well if it’s of any reassurance my HbA1C in January 2024 was 46 which was a shock to me as thought I ate reasonably healthily plus kept quite active. I found this forum so helpful with lots of good advice. I managed to get my numbers down to 36 when I had my last blood test in January this year. I simply cut down on carbs and my homemade cakes and pastries. I read the carb contents per 100 grams on food labels and then worked out the amount I had. Cut down on bread and potatoes in particular. Made my own soup as tinned soup has lots of sugar in it. There are so many alternatives it’s just getting used to them. I bake using Almond flour for myself and find I enjoy it. Usually kept below 100 grams of carbs per day. As my GP said don’t cut everything out just in moderation. If I can do it I’m sure you’ll manage as I love my food and still enjoy the occasional treat but in moderation.
