Pre Diabetic Newby

I re-read the letter I was sent and it did tell me the blood result, I think I was just so overwhelmed with everything that it just didn't register. I don't really know what it means but it says my HBA1c is 42<48 mmol/mol. This is in the 'prediabetes range' and I am more at risk of developing Type 2 (T2DM) - just for info too, I have reflux nephropathy which is basically my kidney leaks protein so I have to take a blood pressure medication without having high BP as it protects the kidneys and I was also put on Jardinance which is something diabetics take but they've found it has a secondary benefit in keeping BP down - as my blood pressure is good, they can't increase my BP medication without my BP dropping too low so they introduced the Jardinance to further protect my kidneys even though I'm not diabetic. I see my kidney specialist every 4 months, last time I saw him, in April, he was really happy with how everything kidney related was going so he increased that to 5 months this time. I guess this is why I'm so very confused by all this. There was absolutely no mention of my blood sugar going up at my last appt and I mentioned to him that I hadn't been feeling well. I even sent an email to check that the swelling in my legs and feet I'm getting atm isn't kidney related because my GP asked me if that could be a possibility and I had a letter back, for my GP, to say everything is well and could she check other areas. Am I being too pinickity? I just went to the GP as a cry for help really, because this pain and swelling in my feet every night was driving me mad and I just needed to know if it was anything treatable, my weight, the menopause??? Because if it is, I need a bit of help to manage it. It's through the BT the GP then did that this has all come from. I don't know if that blood sugar is borderline, just outside of normal or what? My husband thinks I should just wait til I see the group at my surgery and carry on as normal for now but I feel that would be like burying my head in the sand - I want to be proactive, especially as I feel so flipping awful all the time atm.
I would tend to agree with your husband. Low carb has been good for me but increased protein may be unhelpful for you given your kidney problems. If you are adding sugar to anything I would stop. If there is a way of moving more especially swimming I would do it. You need a dietician to knit together all your ailments and medications and advice on food which is sufficiently nutritious that doesn't worsen your arthritis or kidney problems. I suspect with your stomach surgery you av oid over loading with carbs.

Good luck

As a general rule of thumb, I find that carbs tend to be a bit too filling so I don't usually eat much bread, have little potato and very few chips. Pasta and rice meals are minimal these days but what I've found quite unnerving is that carbs ar in almost everything from milk to fruit juices - things I would have just consumed without a thought. The letter I was sent describes a mythical healthy breakfast: Bran Flakes, a slice of brown toast and a glass of juice. On paper that would have been an excellent break before, now it's full of sugar! I've dieted all my life and all of a sudden I don't have a clue what I should eat. I knew my diet was poor but that was because I don't eat my 5 a day, or manage to drink water. I had no idea, after dieting all my life, so for around 45 years, that I knew so little about food.

My breakfast is usually full fat Greek yoghurt. At the moment I tend to buy M and S 10% but I have bought Greek style from various places plus berries raspberry blueberry or strawberry with a few nuts and sometimes seeds. As an alternative I have eggs. Go back to the nhs site I posted which on left has links to various websites including Freshwell Caldesi and Mosely. The Caldesi recipes are tasty and very low carb. I'm on a medication where I should have more carbs than that. Maybe you could pick a few recipes from the sites that appeal from a taste point of view or preparation point of view then ask your GP, Consultant or dietician if they would work for you. Your husband could have carbs with it.

Good luck
