Hi Dawn
Warm welcome to the forum .

Hello Dawn and welcome to the forum. I read everything I can about the D, forearmed is forewarned and all that. I've just reserved Diabetes for Dummies at Stretford Library. :D

Hi Thanks for the reply. I am taking enough medication for other things as it is I dont really want to start taking medication for this as well. I would much rather control it with diet and excersise but I cant get my head around everything. Im not very healthy and I am quite a lot over weight. I will have a look for this book.

Hi Dawn...probably best to try and manage your pre-diabetes as if you have been diagnosed with diabetes from the start...that way hopefully you will be able to manage it with just diet & exercise...we have lots of forum members who control their diabetes with diet & exercise only...you need to try and avoid carb heavy foods...rice...pasta...potatoes....white bread...starchy vegetables...some fruits that contain a lot of sugar... low fat foods as they can contain a lot of sugar to make them more palatable...it isn't as bad as it sounds...and you can still enjoy a varied diet...I still enjoy sausages & burgers (the ones with a high meat content) and other red meat...I eat high protein bread such as Burgen bread...green leafy veggies ...when I was diagnosed one of the books that helped me a great deal was Type 2 Diabetes The First Year by Gretchen Becker...herself a diabetic who guides you through her first year month by month...it is a shock but once you start adjusting your diet/lifestyle you will feel the benefits...and of course it will help with your weight problem....look in the 'What have you eaten today' thread it will give you some ideas about what other diabetics are eating to control their blood glucose...and there are some really good recipe threads here...can I ask have you thought of testing your BG levels with a meter...an excellent way to see how the food you are eating affects your blood sugar...sounds daunting but really simple...and ask questions...I learned such a lot from this forum...good advice available for any question you feel relevant...be interested to hear of your progress...it is a lot to get used to...but once you decide how to tackle your condition much of it will become second nature...good luck.

Hi Dawn. It is unlikely that you will be prescribed meds at pre-diabetes stage. Now is the time to take D by the reigns & get in control. Carbohydrates are the worst culprit for raising blood sugar levels (commonly shortened on her to BS or BG), so try cutting back on bread, rice, pasta & potatoes as well as the obvious sugary things. Fruit should also only be eaten in moderation. On here, we also recommend getting a blood glucose meter to check what foods affect your BG. We are all different and some of us tolerate different foods better than others. GP's tend to say testing isn't necessary, but without testing, it's much more difficult to control your blood sugars.
