Pre-diabetes help please

Welcome to the Forum sausages. I was pre-diabetic a few years back, got back to normal then went back to pre-diabetic again last year. As carried no weight GP thought insulin resistance with age was the cause. 64 at start of it. 71 now.

I ate very much like your Mom i.e. porridge, breakfast cereal, sandwiches, potatoes etc. I did not eat loads of sweet stuff but did have them.

When I was first diagnosed and came here I was gobsmacked to say the least to discover that muesli and toast for breakfast, sandwiches at lunchtime with fruit and snacking on fruits at work like bananas, potatoes at tea time and then pasta, rice dishes went out for meals was a disaster.

I bought Michael Moseley's books and a book by David Cavan who is a diabetes expert (Consultant not an "influencer") , altered my diet and was very pleased to find I was not hungry anymore like I was before. Previously, I was always wondering when the next meal or when I was going to snack again.

I appreciate your Mom in her 80s may not want to give up foods and it is her choice obviously. I just wanted to say that, for me personally and I cannot state it is the same for others, I have never felt hungry or deprived of anything and giving up sweet and high carb foods is not that bad. Even my GP and DN said have treats from time to time so you don't have to stop completely.

You may though think "what use is her advice when her BG has gone up again"!! Must have overdone the carbs a bit as was not expecting them to do a test last year.

Thanks @Maz2 That's really interesting. I'll take a look at the books.
I'm passing all the info on to Mum. I think maybe it's going to take a little bit of time for her to get used to the idea of change.
At the end of the day it'll be her decision on how good or naughty she wants to be, but it's really useful to have everyones experiences.
