At risk of diabetes
Hi
I’ve joined this forum as recent blood tests show an HB1aC level of 47 (an increase of 4 points since June ) The thing is since May I’ve actually lost 2 stone and have reduced my carbs and sugar intake radically! I was told it could be a “blip” but can’t have another test for 3 months and am petrified that it will increase further in the next 3 months. I do an hours circuit class once a week and an hours Pilates twice a week. I do have a sedentary job but have recently moved to a stand-up desk at work. I’m really not sure what else I can do to try and help myself. Anyone got any suggestions?

Welcome to the forum Anne.
As an HbA1c test gives an average from 8 - 12 weeks, you need to give a big enough gap between tests to show any changes etc.
Have you done any self testing?

Welcome to the forum, @Anne2 🙂

Other things besides diet can cause unexpected highs - eg some meds will raise your blood sugar, and so will stress, if you've had an unusually stressful few months, so try not to worry too much, it could easily be a blip.

Have you reduced starchy carbs (like pasta, potatoes, rice, and bread) as well as sugary ones? How about fruit and fruit drinks? People often keep eating fruit when they cut other carbs, thinking it's healthy, and a lot of diabetics can't tolerate many fruits.

Do you have a meter to test your own blood sugar at home? That's the best way to work out which foods you can eat without a spike in your blood sugar and which ones send it up too much. A lot of people here have this one - https://homehealth-uk.com/all-products/codefree-blood-glucose-monitoring-system-mmoll-or-mgdl/ as it has cheaper test strips than most of the others (if you decide to get it, you'll need to select mmol/L as that's the measurement used in the UK, and you'll need to get some extra test strips to go with it).

You may also find some of these links useful - scroll down to the type 2 and general ones, and have a look at Maggie Davey's letter and at Test, Review, Adjust - https://forum.diabetes.org.uk/boards/threads/useful-links-for-people-new-to-diabetes.10406/

Welcome Anne2

Stressing about it is not going to help, you are doing fine with what you are doing, If you've lost that 2 stone since your last test and have reduced carbs and portion size and are exercising regularly chances are you will likely be back in the normal range.

Keep up the good work, doing what you are doing levels likely to reduce HbA1c (these tested every 12 weeks) as standard
