Due to my GP being on a gradual return to work after illness I had the pleasure of speaking to one of the Senior partners after a blood test showed my thyroid dosage needed increasing, so I said fine no problem so why am I losing so much weight (11kg)? His reply was classic "I don't know but it must have a cause and it's obviously not your thyroid." Doh you ain't kidding man.

So - did you enquire whether he perchance - as your GP at that moment - had any theories ?

Actually although it is much rarer you can lose weight with hypothyroidism.

I've never seen that Lillian, but you're right. There is usually another cause for the weight loss, mind, at least not directly, because as you know, hypothyroidism causes loss of appetite. If you eat very little, even with hypothyroidism, it's possible to lose weight. Plus in tropical medicine any number of parasites can cause weight loss in hypoththyroid folk

Nah, My own GP has ordered a chest Xray and asked my neurologist for an urgent referral back to him as he is concerned some of my symptoms are related to the Transverse myelitis I was diagnosed with a couple of years ago. I hope there's just a simple explanation for the weight loss and not the TM back again.

Yes, it is very rare but does happen. I was chatting to a woman and her son in the waiting room of a thyroid specialist. They were both very thin and she said her own GP had accused her and her son of being anorexic but not admitting it. I do not know, of course, whether it was from direct or indirect hypothyroidism. I lost my appetite but still gained weight
