but here goes....

Every day when I get home from work my bg levels are around 4-5. Would it be ok to have a jacket potato for my tea? I’ve not had a potato in weeks are really fancy one with tuna and salad tonight

The only way to know is to try and test, test, test! Make it a very small one (or if you are not alone, share a larger one). Weigh it so you know for future reference. Add plenty of butter or full fat mayo to help fill you up.

As above the only way to know is to test, personally I'd test more than just the 2 hours after a meal with something like that, depending on the size of potato that could be a lot of carbs, I mean I've just looked at Asda's frozen ones which is 32g per potato whereas McCains are a whopping 43.4, me personally can only tolerate potatoes in boiled form, I've tried mash and roast but just cant handle them as the GI changes depending on which way it is cooked, I limit myself to 150g boiled charlotte/jersey royal/salad potatoes as they are the lowest carb potatoes I've come across xx

No question is daft, @bakebeans!

I would also avoid a large jacket or mashed potato, although I can tolerate two or three boiled or roast spuds - as the others have said, try it and see 🙂

Yup, try it and see. I would weigh the spud and make sure I knew which variety it was and write both down with the bg change after one and a half hours. The numbers would all go in my diary for future reference. Unless the numbers were crazy I would try again but with a different variety of spud.

I’m not sure I’m feeling brave enough, how daft is that?! Maybe I’ll pluck up the courage later but at the min I’m thinking it will just be tuna salad

Whatever you feel comfortable with, obviously, but one little experiment isn't going to wreck anything and with those levels, I reckon you've got room to take some little risks.

Eddy is spot on, bakebeans. You will never find out what the real boundaries are unless you start pushing against them. One experiment with a medium spud isn't going to do anything that you will not recover from quickly and you never know, it might open up a whole new set of recipe options.

Ditto what has been said - go for it and see what happens, it won't wreck anything and at the very least you'll enjoy the spud... <slurp> :D

I think you should definitely try it and test as the others have said. On a life long challenge like we all have we have to have things that we can enjoy and look forward to or we will eventually fail. If your numbers don’t spike too high then have one every now and again. I had exactly that last night, jacket with tuna and mayo with a small salad, I thoroughly enjoyed it and did not feel guilty. I have one every month or so.

Maybe try cooking some cauliflower - the flavour can be reduced by using a couple of changes of water in the process, then take the inside out of the baked potato and mash in the cooked cauliflower with lots of butter and grated cheese - pile it into the skin again and see how you go with that.
If you want to test it you might as well go large rather than have a disappointingly small experience, but do be prepared to feel hungry later on so have something ready for that possibility.

Last night all went wrong I didn’t get in until nearly 8pm and felt like I’d hit a wall, bg was 4.2 so I ended up with salad and fish as it was quick so tonight is jacket potato night I’m going to have it quite early so if I’m not happy with my numbers after a couple of hours I can go for a nice long walk to get them down

I had a decent size jacket potato tonight with tuna, cheese, salad, coleslaw and beetroot. Was 4.3 just before I ate and 6.7 2 hours later. I think I’m quite happy with that I will check again in an hour just in case it goes up anymore

7.3 after 3 hours so maybe not as good as I thought

5.6 3 hours and 45mins later

Not too bad, perhaps a slightly smaller one next time?

I will definitely have it again but will leave the beetroot salad off the side, reading the packet today the carbs and sugar were about 5g each per 6th of the pack and I had a very good spoonful so more than I should which probably didn’t help my numbers. Plus I didn’t move off the sofa after I usually go for a walk but it started raining and I had some tv to catch up on so that wouldn’t have helped. It’s all a learning curve
