Type 1
Hi everybody

I have had type 1 diabetes for over 30 years and have suffered with pain in my abdomen for a number of months. I have had an ultrasound which found no issues. My doctor has come to the conclusion that it may be neuropathy and I have been prescribed amitriptyline. My pain goes away if I don't excersise but as soon as I do the pain returns. Has anybody else had a similar experience?

Thanks

Hi Alex, welcome to this friendly forum. What took you so long to join in?:D

No, it can’t be neuropathy. Neuropathy doesn’t go away if you don’t exercise. Does the pain stop you exercising? Has it ever come on after eating? And now a daft question. You don’t smoke, do you? And how’s the diabetic control going at the moment? You’ve obviously had it since you were little, so well done if you haven’t got any complications🙂

Sorry about all the questions, it just helps all the folk on the forum with all their experience to help🙂

Thanks for the reply. My control is good im a non smoker, it's doesn't hurt more after eating. The pain hangs around after excersise. I didn't play any sport for 6 weeks and it felt reasonably ok but then it returned as soon as I excersise. My doctor's at a bit of a loss to explain it I suppose the amitriptyline is to rule neuropathy out but the side effects of the drug sound horrendous

With my neuropathy the pain never goes away though it does vary in the degree of it depending on what my levels are. The higher my levels go the more the pain is for me a good indication when things are going astray. I take amitriptyline for it which helps ease the pain, though settle for a low dose just to help ease it as don't want to mask the warning signs of things going wrong.

Ok ..... did you perchance enquire where the nerves he thinks are damaged, happen to live?

I have regular pain on one side of my abdomen. It does go away but if I lift something heavy or similar it comes back for a few days.

It disturbs my sleep because I prefer to sleep on my side. I take paracetamol and use ibroprofen gel to relieve it.

My GP agrees with me that it's most likely from when my little one woke me one time vigorously shaking my side and it's pulled some muscles there.

Im quite an active person and I can totally see how it looks like a muscle injury and I still believe it could be. However with 6 weeks rest it didn't heal, an ultrasound also didn't show any muscular damage. I've only seen my g.p who is sort of trying to rule out neuropathy so specific nerves etc have not been discussed. In these times of the cash strapped NHS my g.p won't refer on for a specialist until they have exhausted all possibilities. I've been told to try amitriptyline to see if symptoms improve, if it does I presume they'll refer me to a specialist.

Some muscle injuries don't heal very well - or not as strong at least. My costochondritis is 4 years old now and was from lifting the (not so) little one up in museum so he could get a better look. That flares up if I'm silly enough to lift anything heavy.

I did speak to a physio, but she also said there wasn't any specific exercise she could give me to strengthen (the abdominal muscle) back up.
