For those who like pork scratchings as snacks this headline has been publicised today:

Dozens of people have fallen ill after eating a bad batch of pork scratchings linked to salmonella.

There has been a recall made by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) of packets of Mr Porky, Jay's and The Real Pork Crackling Company made by snack firm Tayto Group.

The snacks, which expire next February, are being linked to cases of salmonella poisoning, according to a MirrorOnline report.

Thanks for the "heads up"

I certainly had a bad packet of Mr Porky's a couple of weeks ago, but I wasn't actually ill, they just tasted rancid. I was really cross because I had bought them as a treat for a packed lunch on a day away with the horse and at £1.50 for the packet they were anything but cheap. BBE was Nov, so still plenty of date on them. Interestingly it was the only packet of any brand pork scratchings left in Morrison's that day

I find it hard to understand how something which is cooked through at such a high temp, can have salmonella unless there is some post cooking contamination, which would be extremely concerning. I have had Salmonella when I was much younger, so I wonder if I have some immunity. I have to confess, I am normally very cavalier about expiry dates and BBE dates etc and often eat things well out of date. Will be a while before I have any more pork scratchings though as they really were yuk!

I’m not sure that you get immunity to salmonella @rebrascora I think there are various bacteria in the group, and you can get affected by the bacteria again.

Presumably they’re investigating the cause of the contamination so there should be some answers soon.

Thanks

At least your teeth will have a reprieve. That is what happened to me with prawns, a horrible sandwich, so I can't even contemplate eating prawns now.

Thanks @Leadinglights. I'm off Mr Porky's Crispy Strips at the moment to give my teeth a rest, but will stay off them for a bit longer given this news!

I have to say that having tried quite a few brands, Mr Porky's are the most expensive and most dentally challenging and my least favourite..... but when I can't get any elsewhere, I have to take what Morrison's have on offer. My packet of pork scratchings in the back of the cupboard is my sanity for when I am having a real struggle day..... or as a special treat for a day away.
I was buying catering packs of Gruntled online but had to stop as I had no willpower to ration them. o_O 😱

No longer eat as I ended up with an expensive trip to Dentist after I last had.
