I am using porcine insulin (animal). I was wondering if anyone has tried using Fiasp with porcine insulin to reduce the spikes after a meal as animal insulin is a slower acting insulin. I do understand that not many of us use porcine insulin nowadays. I'm not sure if you can use these two different types of insulin together, although not mixed, but injected separately. Maybe someone has used both insulins with the pump for example and might have noticed a change in the action of the animal onslin. I tried contacting the manufacturers directly to see if it was possible to use both these insulins together but they wouldn't commrent! Strange eh?

I don't know anything about porcine insulin but I imagine that if it's used to cover the carbs in meals then no it wouldn't be able to be used alongside another insulin that does the same job as that would make dosing of each a total nightmare, I don't think its odd that the manufacturer wouldn't comment, after all you would have been talking to someone from customer service who aren't medically trained so couldn't possibly comment on the situation, best to chat to whoever provides your diabetes care about anything like that xx

Hello little fawn,
many low carbers use two different types of bolus insulin depending on what they are eating but not at the same time if you see what I mean. I suspect you could end up in a lot of trouble hypo wise doing that.

Even though I suspect it's teaching your Grandmother to suck eggs by asking you this...……… are you bolusing 30 mins before you eat and also making sure you are below 8 before you eat as this makes a lot of difference.

I use a pump and had bovine neutral in it for many years then changed to Fiasp, Fiasp is a lot of work and doses need spitting for meals due to the way it works. If you low carb then I would suspect the Porcine insulin would be better for you.

What are your blood sugars like four hours after your meal or before the next meal compared to what you started with?

I think your best bet would be to discuss it with your clinic. It’s certainly not common practice, but then neither is using porcine these days!

At the end of the day I suspect you will only know whether it will work as you hope if you try it. Fiasp works really well for some, but not for others. Some find it stings uncomfortably, and I found it stopped working rapidly for me after about 6 weeks and I began to need more and more of it to do the same job.

Let us know how you get on with your experiments if you decide to give it a go.

As Sue says there is usually quite a bit of experimentation needed to get different insulins to work well for each individual.
