Does anyone know if homemade popcorn is ok for a snack? - im thinking of buying a maker from argos and not sure if Popcorn would be low gl. If its ok does anyone know of any reasonably healthy ways to flavour it?

Not really recommended, as it is nearly 80g carbs per 100g. More to be eaten as an occasional treat rather than a regular snack, and in small quantities to avoid raising levels too much.

I was under the impression it was quite a good snack, as 100g is loads of popcorn! According to my carbs and cals book, a bowlfull of buttered popcorn weighs only 30g and is 15g carbs. So if you had a maker at home you could just do a small amount and it wouldn't be many carbs.

Not sure about healthy seasonings, how about cinnamon or something herby?

I stand corrected, obviously an effect of not having had popcorn for about 40 years! 😛

Pop corn is a good snack but save your money and make it in a saucepan 🙂
I love adding some sweetner and cinimon to it as well.

I just use a pan ! Its nice when its hot by its self. 🙂

I just do as HOBIE does, its a yummy snack but like Pringles once you start popping then theres no stopping

I would advise to in any case avoid sugared popcorn (to my mind that stuff is the opposite of Pepsi Max -- maximum sugar, no taste) and whatever flavouring you use, use it sparingly to bring out the subtle and delicate flavour of the corn itself (which is far too easily swamped, and usually is).

Also, avoid packaged precooked popcorn, or any popcorn that was made more than an hour or two ago; cinema popcorn is usally OK (provided they haven't used too much salt or sugar) due to fast turnaround, but the reason sealed-bag popcorn is often toffee coated is that the chewiness of the toffee helps disguise the fact that the popcorn has long since gone stale.

Im new to this so not to sure how many carbs is good or not.
But tescos own sweet pop corn has just under 15g of carbs per 1/4 of a bag.

If you're making popcorn, may I suggest my recipe for ULTIMATE popcorn.

You will need:

Popping corn (obviously)
Parmesan
Pancetta/Lardons (see where this is going?)
Wetwipes
No sense of shame or dignity

How to do it.

Cook the pancetta/lardons in a saucepan, remove and put to one side. LEAVE THE LEFTOVER FAT IN THE PAN.

Chuck in the popping corn and slosh it around in the fat.
Return the pan to the hob and cover
Pop the corn.
When the popping is done, put your popcorn in a bowl and mix up with the pancetta.
Garnish liberally with parmesan.
Eat, and clean yourself up with the wetwipes.
