Pointless cover versions versus Tori Holub.

I always liked cover versions that gave a new interpretation of a song or maybe added some additional details to the arrangement. I suppose one of the best examples was Always On My Mind by The Pet Shop Boys which personally I hated. It certainly was an original interpretation but I thought that it totally lost the meaning of the song, sadness, regret, and pathos.

Then there is the cover by [well known singer] which usually strips out all of the detail from the backing and is only of interest to fans of that singer.

When I think of pointless cover versions though, I'm thinking of those that sound so similar to the original that I can't see why they bothered. Or that is what I thought until the YouTube algorithm decided that I might like this. Watching it gave me goosebumps.

I agree with you about 'Always On My Mind': when the Pet Shop Boys brought their version out I thought it was just a flippant insult to Elvis - and yet their version's payed on the radio nowadays much more than Elvis' version is!

In a similar vein I think is Bob Dylan's cover of 'The Boxer' (on his 'Self-Portrait' album): Dylan always seemed to regard Paul Simon as little more than a lightweight Dylan imitator and I think that Dylan's (badly double-tracked) version of 'The Boxer' was intended as an insult.

What do think about Tori though Cliff? This version of the song is simply just a note perfect reproduction of the original which I normally wouldn't care for but the vocals are just so incredible. So uncanny, that seeing it for the first time gave me shivers.

Yes, I see what you mean!

You talk about insult, I consider Scissor Sisters version of Comfortably Numb and insult to both Pink Floyd and music in general.

Some covers are excellent and yes, some are dreadful. Others are very very different.

I'm a sucker for a good female vocalist and I'm also very interested in international music and a big Leonard Cohen fan.

I give you therefore Ebba Forsberg who has done a number of Cohen covers but translated and sang in Swedish...

My thing now is watching reaction videos involving the video in the OP. If you haven't heard of these, they are You Tube videos of someone reacting to another video that is shown in an inset on the screen. The followers send in suggestions for videos that would make a good reaction video and the protagonist videos themselves watching it for the first time. It's a lot more fun than it sounds, the format can be quite entertaining. Watching people's faces when Tori starts to sing is pretty amazing.

These aren't limited to music videos, there is a Canadian girl who now lives in the UK who had never heard of the IOM TT Races. Her reactions to a video of the total insanity of modern motorcycle street racing was priceless.

If we’re talking about an LC cover? This version was probably the best thing about h the whole movie.

Theres loads that have done IoM TT.......they really lose it when they watch sidecars

I watch quite a few reactors ..all for different reasons.....ones into motorsport and cars......another is a therapist who analyses lyrics......theres two black guys in las vegas ive watched for years......all they knew was rap/hiphop but someone challenged them to do 'heavy metal'.....since they knew no better they started reacting to metallica....which is when i found them......but we started making comments how metallica are thrash not heavy and try black sabbath......it was a joy seeing them get hooked on early sabbath.... one thought Lars Ulrich of metallica was a great drummer til he heard Bill Ward lol.........then they went down the rabbit hole of proper metal........then they did Tool....one of my fave bands.......they got hooked on them so bad that when Tool played vegas they went to the gig.......itsbeen great watching people get so attached to music that was so alien to them

I think one of the ultimate covers must be jimi hendrixs cover of all along the watchtower orginally by bob dylan......after dylan heard it he said jimis arrangement was how he should have written it.....hes not performed his version since
