Relationship to Diabetes
Have you been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes mellitus in the last 12 months?
Have you experienced low mood or depression as a result of this?
Would you be happy talking about this in a short, anonymous interview?

I am currently conducting a research project examining these experiences. If you would be happy to participate in this, then please send me a private message and I will send you more information.
Participation involves an online interview using instant messaging (Full instructions will be provided). Face-to-face interviews are available if preferred and if within a 10 mile radius of Coventry University.

Many thanks,
Jo

I don't qualify for this one (I fail on points 1 and 2). Having taken part in everything that I do meet the criteria for, I found these studies interesting and helpful in putting my thoughts into order. 🙂

Was guna it then realised I was dx more then 12 month ago

Yes, the criteria are quite tight.

Sometimes I think that's a disadvantage putting quite tight criteria on research, means quite a lot of us can't participate.

Anyways good luck jo

Hi Steff,
This is an issue that has been raised, so I am looking into whether I can change it to make it a bit more flexible. Do you mind if I ask when you were diagnosed so I can see if it is something I can change?
thank you for the feedback, it is very useful

Hi LeeLee,
I am trying to find out whether I change the time to longer than 12 months, from the feedback so far it sounds like it is definitely too tight (which is really useful feedback). I feel the second criteria may need to stay though, as I am looking partly into the effect of the diagnosis on mood- it does not need to be a diagnosis of depression, just to have experienced low mood or similar. I hope that helps, and thanks again for feedback. I will let everyone know if I change the criteria (I have to check with my supervisor before I make any changes just to make sure)!

Hi jo,

I was dx in 09 .

Hi Steff,
Thank you. I am awaiting a response to my query and will post an update as soon as I have some guidance. Thanks again for the helpful feedback
Jo 🙂

I was dx'ed Nov 2013. But too stupid to get depressed about it. :( Just cracked on with own research (came here for one thing) and self-managing.

But ask me if I'm silently raging about the gawd-awful dietary advice for diabetes (eat plenty of starchy carbs etc) and the official attitude that T2 diabetics already have one foot in the grave and will lose one sooner than later too, then sign me up. 😡 :D

Good luck anyway.

It's a very good point Lurch. It's not just the fact of being diagnosed with a chronic disease that can lead to depression (or anger, in your case), it is the fact that people often start off with poor advice and an overwhelming feeling of guilt that they have 'brought it on themselves'. The vilefication of people with Type 2 in particular often leads to people becoming withdrawn and feeling unable to discuss things, and resigned to their fates :(

Hi Lurch
Yes, a very good point. One of the things I am aiming to examine is the level and type of support that people are (or not) offered following diagnosis.
(I would be happy to talk to you if you were willing as I am sure your experience is very useful!)
Jo 🙂

Changes to study

Hi all,
I just wanted to let you know that following some of your (much appreciated) advice, I have made official changes to my study so that I am not restricted to talking to people who have been diagnosed within the last 12 months. I am still looking at trying to find out about people's experiences of the diagnosis, as well as examining it's impact on low mood as before. If anyone is happy to talk to me, without needing to have been diagnosed quite as recently as I was previously asking, I would be very grateful if you could send me a private message, and I will send more information on the study.
Thank you for reading
Jo 🙂

Giving this a *bump* 🙂 Can anyone help Jo, now that the criteria have been expanded? Please do if you can!

I would be happy to help. I was diagnosed in October '13.

I have just completed my conversation with Jo, for her research. It was all pretty straightforward, not at all intrusive, and actually felt quite cathartic. 🙂
