Relationship to Diabetes
i have been having signs of diabetes for a while now but my doctor didn't take them seriously, so I insisted he did some test, my urine came back as high sugar levels, and bloods came back as glucose of 12. I a man having a fasting test on Wednesday, however I wake up every night between 2 and 3 shaking and very restless. I also have reflux and thought it was To do with this even though I didn't have the signs of acid, I have been taking Gaviscon, which stops the shakes after a short time, I a man worried that if I wake up on Wednesday and don't take the Gaviscon what will happen as I assume it is to do with my blood sugar levels.

Please help

The blood glucose is one thing and the reflux is something else. However:

People with diabetes have high levels of blood sugar (glucose). Over time, high blood sugar levels can damage the nerve (vagus nerve) that controls the muscles involved in breaking up food in the stomach and moving it through the gastrointestinal tract. When the vagus nerve is damaged, the stomach muscles stop working normally. Food then moves slowly from the stomach to the small intestine or stops moving altogether. This disorder is known as gastroparesis, also called delayed gastric emptying. The delayed emptying of the stomach can increase your acid levels and cause GERD and heartburn. Type 2 diabetes is a very common known cause of gastroparesis. (Source Proactive Health - US based Medical search engine, sort of)

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, I've been diabetic for 17 years and, touch wood, never experienced reflux, or any stomach problems, so you really need to ask your GP for a definite answer.

Hi Babsie, welcome to the forum 🙂 What does your doctor say about the reflux? It's not a problem I have heard of that is normally associated with potential diabetes, so that sounds like it may be a separate issue. As a diabetes symptom, shaking and restlessness is more associated with blood sugar levels that are too low rather than too high, and it doesn't look like the gaviscon contains sugar which would raise levels of a low blood sugar, so I'm afraid I have no suggestions there. When you wake up is it because you feel the need to go to the toilet? What other symptoms have you experienced that have led you to suspecting diabetes? Sorry for all the questions!

Gastroparesis is a very rare complication of long-term diabetes (years or even decades), so highly unlikely in someone only just experiencing symptoms of high blood sugar levels.

Please describe what you think reflux is, there done things similar that are not reflux.

When you wake, do you easily get back to sleep.

Do you need to go to the loo.

What other symptoms do you get

My reflux is a separate issue and taking medication for this it was diagnosed in April by endoscopy.

The symptoms I have been having for a couple of months , being extremely tired, pins and needles in arms and hands, seeking buckets every few minutes, weight loss, constant nausea. A urine test came back as high sugar levels and a blood test came back 12 for diabetes test, they also found bold in my urine and on anti-biopics for infection.

Notes I always need to wee I can be up 2,3,4 times in the night and cannot get back to sleep because I'm shaky.

My reflux was diagnosed by endoscopy in April and I've had the other symptoms for a coup,e of months, thirsty, shaky, tired, needing the loo, pins and needles, high sugar defected in wee and a blood test that came back as 12 for diabetes

Okay, I think the reflux may or may not be linked. Did the endoscopy show inflammation, has your doctor discussed omeprazole as an alternate to Gaviscon.

The reading of 12, was this from a finger prick

I have an erosion low in my stomach, I had bad reactions to PPI's so I am on Ranitidine with gaviscon after meals.

The blood test was from the arm and sent to hospital for testing.

The reflux treatment makes sense now, I would take out the link to diabetes.

The reading of 12 has some confusion in that it is either very high in which case would support your other symptoms. Have you had any wrought gain or loss, try and think back when you first started getting these symptoms, have they come on rapidly or have they been building over time.

I am heading out shortly, but I would suggest running through your fears with your diabetic nurse, it is often easier to get call than an appointment. Your story is a familiar one, so don't be too alarmed. You might want to stay taking some proactive action. At this stage the only thing you can actively do is to reduce some of the usual blood raising foods, potatoes, sticky rice, pasta. Don't go too fast as any rapid change in diet could make you feel equally unwell, especially with your gastritis.

Don't worry about the Gaviscon, any effect on the fasting reading will be minimal
