I just need some confirmation once and for all about sweeteners.

I have alot of contradicting information about artificial sweeteners. I thought they were safe, but after finding out that they are bulked out with carbohydrates (and STILL claiming to be safe for diabetics!) I'm pretty worried about them. I heard somewhere that these carbohydrates don't affect the blood sugar, or something. I'm just so confused.

Is consuming a lot of sweetener going to affect my blood glucose? Is there any in particular that are best for keeping blood glucose low? They all seem to claim they are safe, but my blood sugar is still sitting at 12.6, which to me is proving otherwise.

Please help, I'm so confused. :(
 
I know sweetex is zero carb and calorie. There are some which are a mix of natural sugars and sweeteners which contain carbs.

They will all say on the packaging if they contain carbs. 🙂

I use Sweetex all the time with no probs even in my porridge in a morning !
 
Thanks, I'll definately give sweetex a try! It sounds like it will be a lot safer than most of the other sweeteners I've been using. I can't believe the amount of carbs they contain.
 
Many seem to be a 'light' version of sugar. Not what I would have expected either, but sweetex is certainly carb free.

As an aside, life's a lot easier if you can do without any swetener in tea/coffee and just use the minimum amount of sugar, or maybe splendour or a.n.other sweetener you can cook with for cooking.🙂

Honey is often cited as a better, healthier sweetener for things like porridge too.

The confusion arises because some foods contain substances which the lower intestine does not absorb (like fibre) but these are still carbohydrates. So some sweeteners have a high carbohydrate value but will not get digested and should not raise your blood glucose level.

Like a lot of things to do with diabetes, you will have to try things and test what they do to you. What affects one person may not affect you in the same way.

What is fairly certain is that the consumption of food which will not be digested by your gut in large quantities will almost certainly cause undesired end results (if you know what I mean).

If you can gear yourself up to avoid sweeteners you will be better off. The problem comes if you want to substitute something for sugar in cooking.
