Hi, welcome to the forum 🙂 Very sorry to hear about your problems. I can't claim to understand all the figures, but clearly you should not be dropping into the 2s after eating. What have your doctors suggested over the years? Would it be possible to have a small snack in between meals to counteract the lows before they arrive? Have you ever been given a CGMS (Continuous Glucose Monitoring System) to measure exactly what is happening?

We have a couple of members here who suffer from an over-reaction of their pancreas in response to food causing unexpected lows. I think the solution is quite complex and not foolproof, but involves eating a low GI diet and the drug metformin, but can't say if this would be something that would work for you. Have you seen an endocrinologist about the problem?

Welcome bnstmf1984

Thinking back, in my teens, I used to get low blood sugars, not immediately eating, but was getting irritable if I went more than 4 hours without eating. My mum had experienced the same as a young woman, and knew to keep sweets or biscuits to hand. She mentioned my issue to GP when we attended on a very rare occasion for a sinus infection - GP suggested ending each meal with an oatcake and cheese and having a snack before bed. That worked - effectively low GI snacks.

Obviously, home blood testing kits weren't available in the late 1970s / early 1980s, so I don't know the levels I was experiencing, just the symptoms. I didn't get type 1 diabetes until aged 30 years in mid 1990s, and can't be sure that there was any connection. I have no idea whether my history is typical, and I wouldn't like to imply that your reactive hypoglycaemia will lead to diabetes of any type. However, as it's so bad, I hope you can get refered to an endocrinologist and see a specialist dietician.

Hi bnstmf1984,
welcome to the forum.
Looking at your blood sugar results the simple answer in my view would be to have a small snack between meals.
Do as others have said though and ask for a referal to a dietition.

did you do any test about any metabolic disorder it could be something to do how many protein and fat plus the carbs you eat ? maybe?

Hello and Welcome!

I'm just going to repeat what others have said: a dietician sounds a good person to help with this. Are you able to get a referral to one? (I mean, a medical dietician).

Meanwhile, if you're slim and underweight rather than overweight AND getting hypo, I guess snacks in between meals is a good way forward. I eat Belvita bars in summer and more porridge in winter to try and keep my diabetes stable.

Ps about the endocrine thing; I don't really know anything about this but hyperthyroidism might do this???

..........

Ive done all of that and would add drenching upper body nightsweats and an unpleasant skin rash to the list

Its not much fun.

We are all different, but in my case....

I used to have a daily issue with reactive hypoglycemia ( though didnt know then that that was what it was called ! ). After about a month of avoiding all gluten, hypo frequency reduced considerably. Subsequently ( following an OGTT ) RH was identified so stopped eating all starchy foods. I now hypo perhaps once every couple of months. Life is very much better.
