Wondering how everyone deals with pizza?

On MDI I didn't notice it causing problems because my BG was allover the place anyway. Now my control is much better the problems with pizza are becoming clear!

Last night ate pizza, carb counted perfectly, bolused, & 3 hours later BG 19.1 😱

Thanks Northey, that was really helpful!

Think I'm going to bolus for extra carbs next time, and try a dual wave. I refuse to stop eating pizza, it's my favourite treat!

Interesting that you still have problems with pizza even with a pump.

Pizza is K's favourite meal and she continues to have one every Saturday, but more often during Summer holidays as it is quite hard to eat out with a vegetarian child and have something other than pizza. She always injects after a meal now, because of pizza really, but she is still high at bedtime on a Saturday. However I have stopped worrying about these highs as she does not usually feel 'high', has no keytones, and after a summer of pizza her Hba1c was 7.3...

(we do find having baked beans with the pizza helps a bit as long as you carb count them properly - and we always round 'up')

not sure if im missing something here, as to why pizza is a problem as such?

the base of the pizza can be the worst part as its fattening and also the sauce you use could have suagr in it, some say going for a thin base helps but i found it was still a problem even then, i make my own now usually vedggie or cheese and tomato and has managed to overcome the spike, the cheese can still be a problem as its fatty to but i use very little these days.

It's two-fold really - the dough is often made with white flour so can cause quite a rapid 'spike' in blood sugars, but on the other hand the fat in the cheese and toppings can slow the digestion and conversion to glucose in the blood, so it's often diffcult knowing just what's going to happen when you eat one - particularly if you are trying to match the peak of your insulin to the peak of digestion.

I'd posted a rambling reply to this, but Northey's one was much better!
