So I'm doing really well and have managed to stay away from all things sweet (3lbs off a 2 stone weight loss). To keep me happy i have a very small amount of nuts and seeds to pick at in the evening. I'm on day 3 of feeling really rubbish with the most disgusting taste of bile 24/7 and i've just discovered it might be the pine nuts i've been eating in amongst the mix? I've spoken to the pharmacist and the nurse and then good old google solved the problem! Has anyone experienced this? And any tips on how to get rid of it (apart from stop eating them) coz that's already a given :(

Yes, I think it’s certain varieties @zelda Its a horrible weird dry metallic taste. I found careful cleaning of my teeth and tongue helped. Apparently, the taste hides in the tongue-coating and that’s why it persists.

Chewing fresh pineapple chunks is supposed to help too.

thanks for that, will get some pineapple tomorrow to try. Will do some extra teeth brushing but i'm rubbish at brushing my tongue ~ the inevitable gagging happens 🙄 It all makes sense i suppose the surface of the tongue could harbour loads!

Try using a clean fingernail or a teaspoon or similar @zelda to clean your tongue. With the pineapple, cut a fresh chunk and chew it slowly moving it round the mouth. You’re supposed to do it a number of times a day but obviously you’ll have to be aware of your blood sugar too.

very grateful for the tips, just back from Tesco because i couldn't wail till tomorrow! will limit the amount of pineapple for def

Are you sure it is the Pine nuts, as some report Metformin leaves them with a strange taste.

I have no idea been taking meds since May and this has just happened in the last 3 days?

Gosh! I’ve never heard of this.

So that’s a new thing the forum has taught me today 🙂

Apparently quite common as well. Thought i was being smart having some nuts and seeds. Some sites say it's a slight nut reaction. As long as it goes away because it's really not nice as you say, every days a school day !

Sounds orrible. I sympathise with the gagging, but it's worth gagging to rid yourself of the taste, surely!

I went the whole hog and threw up.... BUT the pineapple seems to have done the trick? I still have a faint taste so will have some more today ~ who would have thought pine nuts would be the culprit

I googled it too and it seems fairly common. I have a few recipes for salads that have pine nuts in them and I can’t say it has happened to me so far. Then I wondered if perhaps it was because I had my gall bladder removed in 1985, but I learned that I do still make bile apparently, just don’t have anywhere to store it. So you learn something new all the time on the forum.

I have a very small portion of nuts and seeds at night, sometimes only a few pine nuts at a time but they're all stored in the same tub so wondering if that makes the difference. Either way it's bird food now, def will be avoiding that reaction

It worked!!!! still have a faint taste so will repeat today. Thanks! 🙂

Pine nuts are the basis of pesto, so if you have that you may need to be careful or make your own using a different type of nut which does work perfectly well.

It might not be pine nuts themselves, rather a specific variety or varieties. I’ve eaten pine nuts for years and only had the weird taste twice. I believe it to be due to certain varieties. I ate pesto recently and have made my own this year, and again, all ok. The difficulty is that some brands change the variety of pine nuts they use, so you think you’re buying the same again but aren’t.

Cashew nuts are an ok substitute if you’re not sure.

thanks for that, it's kinda put me off for now as i had mixed lots of nuts together i.e. brazil, pine, walnut, cashew and was allowing myself a small amount for a nibbling snack. the birds are loving them! but i think you're right because i have been eating pine nuts from aldi, which were fine and bought some from tesco so brand changes etc mat make the difference

There was a thing about Chinese Pine nuts a few years ago,@zelda , when Italian ones got very expensive, apparently they were cheaper than Italian so used in cheaper Pesto, only they weren’t from the same sort of pine tree as is usual in Italian foods, and gave some people a horrible taste in their mouth. Will try and find a reference.
This is the first thing I found.
Another one on the reasons why it affects the mouth.

Very interesting, will have a read. My pharmacist has added it to his list of causes. He had never heard of it.
