Big **** up with my PET scan today.

When I got the phone call yesterday for a PET scan at 4.00 today I was told not to eat or drink after 12.00 and that my blood sugar had to be below 11.0 So at 11.30 I had a cappuccino and checked my blood sugar which was 11.2 so at 12.30 I had a couple of units with the novarapid just to make sure my blood sugar would be OK for the scan.

When I got there they wouldn't do the PET scan because I had had a milky coffee and the Insulin injection without food less than 4.00 hours before the scan! No one had mentioned anything about not injecting prior to the scan although I had said at the time of the appointment I was diabetic.

What makes it worse is that I am in agony with my back, I have just had 4 days in the Royal Free, discharged on Monday to go to Stanmore for an orthopedic consultation then home and then back up to the Royal Free for this scan ~ it would have been so much simpler if they just transferred me to Stanmore and then back to the Royal Free without being discharged!

How annoying! Touch wood it happens soon, classic case of the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand does. Good luck.

Ah sorry to hear this @The_petal. Hope you can get another appointment soon, and that the scan goes ahead.

All that pain and discomfort must be playing havoc with your BGs :(

My next appointment is for 12.00 so can I take my Lantus in the morning ~ it seems I must aim for about 11.5 when I go to bed so I will have the right value at midday the next day and what happens if I drop low by the time of the scan.

I had a bad experience at the hospital yesterday morning. I had an appointment for an operation at 10.30 to remove (hopefully) a cancerous lesion from my face. Got there an hour early only to be told that I was not on the admissions list. They tracked down the surgeon - not a nice lady - who told them that she had called me 11 times to tell me not to come. I find that very hard to believe, missing one or two calls is possible - but eleven! I asked why they didn't leave a voice message on the 'phone - they could or would not tell me. I asked them to use my mobile number when they wanted to give me a new appointment as I always carry my mobile with me. Here's hoping that the appointment is sooner rather than later.

They aren't allowed to leave voicemail messages about things like that, in case they've got the wrong number and leave it on someone else's voicemail by mistake, or if anyone else has access to your voicemail. Because of patient confidentiality rules, they have to be certain that it will be you and only you that gets the message.

I have had voice mails left on my phone for some else from a hospital and a gp surgery. Cant remember if it was same person.

I’m at be misunderstanding, but if you need to be 11.5 the night before to avoid going hypo on a morning when you don’t eat breakfast, that seems to me that your Lantus dose must be too high.

Ideally with no food/bolus your background insulin injection(s) should keep you within about 2mmol/L up or down from where you start.

There’s often a bit of ‘Hobson’s choice’ in MDI, but 11.5 seems too high to me?

Type 3C so an absolute pain to control.
